Wild Turkey...in Ontario?

Wow no joke they are some adaptable birds if they find what they like in the area and can support their eating habits and sufficient cover. Cool find, Canada anyone?

Yeah

The article even says they have been found in shield country - NORTHERN Ontario. I sure as hell wouldn't want to spend a winter in Sudbury but these birds are way north of what conservation experts figured was the limit of their range.

Wild turkeys have been around here for quite some time. They were reintroduced some 15 or 20 years ago and the population has just exploded. Southern Ontario is a very much a rural enviroment. After you get a bit north of Toronto and the rest of the urban areas its all pretty much farmland and small towns. Great food sources and cover for turkeys. Not much public land in the southern part of the province so the hunting pressure is not excessive. Also, the winters have been comparitively mild for the last few years. I'm very happy the birds seem to be expanding their range further and further. It all adds up to a healthy turkey population and some good hunting!

My Wife is from Southern Ontario and I guided up there for years. We have TONS of wild Turkey on our land near Sarsville in the Ottawa region. Twenty years ago there were none, and now we have atleast 4 flocks of 30-50 birds.
