Will a 30-30 kill a deer?

In essence you are asking "will a bullet make a hole."

Not bashing you but a 30-30 will kill deer very well. It's more popular for deer in most places than 30-06 though your milage my vary. I prefer a fifty caliber myself though, some of those deer have been wearing Kevlar as of late. :D

I'd think that there is a good possibility that something more along the lines of a Ford Taurus, Toyota Camry, Chevy Silverado, Ford F-150, etc., has probably killed more deer than any old 30-30.

Mannlicher:

if that's the dumbest you've seen, just keep reading ( mostly on the other forums ). The fact is, once you see a preponderance of that kind of stuff on a forum, you just quit reading that forum.

I applaud this thread. Not to say this forum gets stuffy, but a bit of fresh air doesn't hurt anything that I can tell.

300 mag only if under 25 yards

personally I use a 577 nitro express with my granny's special "spine tingler"
explosive HEAT loads. Remember to cut the powder by 3 grains for squirrels.

However, a human being using a 30-30 can.

Actually the loss of blood and massive shock resulting from an object going through the animal at 500 FPS causes the death. If we are being technical. :neener:

Hey, c'mon... don't you guys (and gals) know that no gun has EVER killed a deer. It's those darn bullets! The gun just makes them go really fast.

Hunting folklore says that the .30-30 has killed more deer than any other cartridge. I say that the .30-30 has killed more LEGAL deer than any other cartridge. I think that the .22LR has killed more deer than any else.

Definately. :D :D :D

Speaking of deer-overkill, a female friend of mine had her 21st birthday party this weekend, and her butter-bar (2nd Lt, M1A2 tank commander) boyfriend drove up from Fort Knox to attend the party. He brought along his laptop to show all the guys (and non-enviro-weenie girls) a really funny video.

During night exercises, the tankers use thermal sights to find their targets, well, at long range the heated part of the target is about the size of a deer. So, during the video there's a moving target going along, the gunner's tracking it with the main gun, and he pulls the trigger right as the target crosses between a deer standing on the range and the tank. (The deer on the base are notoriously stupid and will hang out right in the middle of live fire exercises)

He missed the target (it went over the top), but SPLATTERED the deer all over the place, you could see the giblets flying up in the air on the thermal scope.

The next day, the crew went out to where the target was, and then started looking behind it for the deer. All they found were four legs just sitting on the ground.

Now THAT proves the only 100% sure kill on a deer is a 120mm Sabot.

I'm not sure. Which is why I need a .35, .356. .375, 45/70...and maybe a coupla others.

Kharn, my friend who was a tanker in the army claims they exploded an errant cow once in a training exercise with an abrams main gun when the commander wasn't around, on purpose, just for spits and giggles. I wouldn't find that funny if I was the rancher who owned the cow, and told him as much.

Got another friend who killed a small woods whitetail couple years ago with a .17 HMR to the neck. He claimed it didn't even take a step. Peeps are not too keen on following all the hunting regs in that part of the state; less'n they get caught anyway. I'm sure many go down to .22lr as mentioned.

Futo Inu: From what happened to that deer, I dont think the rancher could have even proved there was a cow to begin with after the impact (assuming somebody picked up the hooves).

Gawd.........this is more fun than comedy central.:D

Actually....the 30-30 cartridge has killed more deer than ALL other modern cartridges combined! ;)
