will a shorter OAL typically give higher velocity?

im not talking about shorter than what is recommended, but so far with my rifle rounds i have been seating to mag length and am a pretty good ways farther out than recommended (only the .308 really) and wanted to know what kind of difference seating at the minimum could make in velocity

the gun in particular im wanting to work on is a .204 ruger, currently seating 2.26 and minimum is 2.25, i am going to reduce my charge for a little better accuracy but will the velocity be close if not the same if i seat to 2.25 after i drop the load .5 grains?

i have a chrono and will test this on my own but asked here too to see what experiences anyone else has had, since bullets are not cheap either :D

ok will do, im also playing with different primers to try and cure the +/-100fps or so i have been getting with federals, sometimes they shot 2"at 300yds, other times 2" at 100yds(not often though) cci seemed good but cannot find any in stock, or any of the br primers.

i couldnt help but wonder what is considered an insignificant change in this small high velocity case

No and Yes.

It's a percentage of volume thing. Setting a 308 deeper by .020 inches probably only changes the case volume by 1 or at most 2%. Your powder loads probably vary by that much or more and therefore have a greater effect on pressure.

However, in a pistol, the answer might be Yes. In a 9x19 Luger cartridge for instance, a bullet set .020" deeper might change the volume by 10%. Now we're talking changes we can measure.

While this is not exactly what you asked, I wanted to be clear for everyone else reading here since your thread title wasn't clear you were discussing only rifle cartridges.

All the best.

Shorten your seating depth by .020 and drop your powder .2 grains in 9MM and it will go slower as well. Care to test this and let us know?

You don't have anything better to do this afternoon do you? :D

I'll bet you a "cold drink" as they would say in Cool Hand Luke. :)

Accuracy should be the primary concern and velocity secondary. I know that you have seen other threads dealing with COAL and the fact that seating your bullets out usually enhances your groups.
You'll be able to check yourself, utilizing your chronograph and answer your own question.
Those short action magazines do hamstring the seating out to near the leade.

Seating deeper in a bottle neck case won`t make enough difference in chamber volume to be noticed. A small straight walled case with a bullet the same diameter as the case will show a big difference at times.
I doubt the velocity change will be enough to excede the ES of the load. Changing the powder charge will change the velocity. You want to change only one thing at a time if you are looking for a more accurate or consistant load. If you don`t you won`t know what exactly did change the load if better, and if worst you will now have two possible problems to solve.
