In the SR series there is the SR9, SR9c, SR40, SR40c, SR45, and SR1911.

Will Ruger ever make a Ruger American in 40 and possibly a compact version? Does anyone think that Ruger will make an American 1911?

The Ruger American is a series of striker fired polymer pistols. A 1911 is a steel or aluminum framed single action hammer fired pistol. They are 2 completely different critters so no I don't think they will ever make a Ruger American 1911. That's like asking if Harley Davidson will ever make a motorcycle with 4 wheels, 4 doors a roof with a hood and trunk. They might make it but it would not be a motorcycle, it would be a car.

The SR series was a line of striker fired polymer framed pistols UNTIL the SR1911 came out.

What does this have to do with the question? The OP pointed out they have 40's in the SR line up, then asked the question: Will they ever have 40's in the RAP lineup?

Could they come out with a poly framed 1911 and call it the American? Well - if anyone were to do it, it'd be Ruger.

There were 2 questions in the original post. I addressed the 2nd one which is do you think that Ruger will make an American 1911. If it's styled and operates like the rest of the Ruger American line of pistols, then its not a 1911. Ruger already makes a 1911 and also already makes a Ruger American Pistol in 45acp so what the heck would a Ruger American 1911 be? I stand by my answer that no, they will never make a Ruger American 1911. On the other hand I could answer that they already do. Ruger makes a 1911 and its American made

The Ruger trademarked "American" product line is within their free will to produce and label whatever products they see fit.

The Ruger American Rifle isn't a polymer framed, striker fired pistol. But nonetheless, they stuck the American moniker on it. I'd venture there was a marketing meeting in which the AR-556 was kicked around as "American Rifle," but for obvious reasons, that would be short lived.

They can label any model, any way they choose under their trademarked product lines.

Simply addressing the 40S&W question in reference to the RAP9 & RAP45, I don't see the addition of a RAP40 in the future with the current trend away from the 40S&W. I have both a RAP9 & RAP45 I'm more than satisfied with both. With that said I am not a Ruger person, but I'll allow that the Ruger RAP series is on par with my examples of Glock and S&W MP series pistols.

I could see Ruger discontinuing the SR series of pistols in a few years even though the SR pistols are WAYYYY better looking than the RAP line and more ergonomic. I wished that Ruger would have made an SR line of pistols called the "Pro" line with no magazine disconnect and no manual safety.

If they did do away with the SR pistols would they simply rename the SR1911 to the RAP1911?

I for one am liking that .40S&W guns are falling out of favor. I'm buying the ammo and 40 guns for cheap, people on Armslist are more than willing to sell the 40 stuff for way less. I don't see .40S&W going away anytime soon, so I'll just enjoy the cheap prices.

We have a 9mm full sized version of the Ruger American Pistol. I like it. Given the current trend away from .40 I don't think Ruger will make it in that caliber. FWIW Personally I like .40 but it seems to be losing some ground popularity wise.

Given that Ruger has already established the SR 1911 & keeps adding models to that line I don't know why they would decide to make a Ruger American 1911. Anything could happen but I would not expect it.

It seems like all .40 interest was driven by law enforcement.

Now that .40 is falling out of favor, I doubt it.

What do you think a Ruger 1911 American might entail?

Since SR most likely stands for Sturm, Ruger - I think the name will be around for some time regardless of what the pistol themselves look like.
