I don't know whether to laugh or ...or, I dunno.

I do think the "pigeon droppings on the restaurant tables were thought to be a health hazard" bit is hilarious. That part cracks me up for sure.

Wimbledon under fire for pigeon cull
Jun 24, 1:03 pm EDT

LONDON, June 24 (Reuters) - Wimbledon came under fire from animal activists on Tuesday for using marksmen to shoot down dive-bombing pigeons.

The tournament employs two hawks to scare away pigeons who had become a pest swooping down on Centre Court and distracting players in the middle of tense matches.

But the hawks failed to keep the pigeons away from the players’ lawn and the open-air media restaurant so marksmen were called in.

“The hawks are our first line of deterrent, and by and large they do the job,” Wimbledon spokesman Johnny Perkins said.

“But unfortunately there were one or two areas where the hawks didn’t deter the pigeons, so it was deemed necessary to take a harder approach,” he explained.

The marksmen were summoned by Wimbledon as pigeon droppings on the restaurant tables were thought to be a health hazard.

The decision to call in the marksmen was condemned as “cruel and illegal behaviour” by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) which complained to the tournament organisers and the police.

“Since the use of marksmen to kill pigeons appears to have been carried out as a first, rather than a last resort, and not out of a concern for public health, but rather because the animals were deemed inconvenient by players, you appear to be in clear violation of the law,” PETA vice-president Bruce Friedrich said.

And with that, I thank God I live in America.

I pray we never reach that point of lunacy.

LOL, I like the summary of my post, Cmdr.

I am quite aware we have just as many loonies over here; we're just fortunate to have a larger population to dilute their effect more.

Illegal under what law? Pigeons are on the 'pest species' list, and can thus be shot with permission of the land owner/occupier.

I wonder hwat tool(s) were used; supressed shotties or air rifles.

of course it would be more humane to poison them!

PETA is my least favorite carbon based life form.

Amazing that there are still any Brits left who know which end of a gun to point at a target these days. Maybe they were pensioners who served in WWII or something.

SE Michigan recently had exactly that type of lunacy. The good folks in the area did not want deer hunted, in spite of the fact that the deer were so numerous, and so underfeed that they weighed on average 80ish pounds full-grown. After a time of no hunting, and increased car-deer accidents, the powers that be brought in "marksmen" to take out the deer.

What about the states that don't allow dove hunting?

How is that much less loony?

You know, we ought to encourage this.

But first make sure we can be called "Marksmen." Then we would get PAID to hunt.

Maybe make the deer part of our compensation. (As well as a $500 fee per deer).

PETA thinks whilst driving, splattering a bug on your evil assault car's windshield is cruel and should be illegal. I don't hold a high opinion of people who put the lives of food and pests above humans.

The same type of thing has happened here. Outlaw hunting for a certain species, species becomes overpopulated and either starves or starts endangering other species, paid gov't employees come in to do exactly what they outlawed, often by helicopter ($$$$$). State loses revenue from hunting and spends tons of taxpayer money instead. Good enough for gov't work. :banghead:

Maybe some kind of 'Now you know......'

Public service announcement. Get Pamela Anderson(wearing a nagahyde g-string) to hit the PSA circuit and advocate birth control for pigeons. Maybe pass out a few tiny condoms or something.

I'm glad PETA is standing up for the rights of pigeons.

It gives every one a good example of how ridiculous these people really are.

Heh heeeeh..... pigeons!

Whats next.... bacteria?

I read some thing a while back where PETA people were trying to convince people that fish were as smart as dogs!!

The things they say and the position they take are just so far removed from rational it’s really amazing to me people aren't embarrassed to be associated to PETA

I totally support PETA.

People for the Eating of Tasty Animals, that is!
