I need to replace the front sight on my 1970 production Winchester 94 44 magnum with 20" barrel.

Looking at Numrich, I see several different post heights.

How can I determine which is the correct post height?

And before someone says "measure your old one," I filed it down until it's too short, and that's why I'm replacing it. (And I'll likely file the new one down as well, although hopefully not as much.)

So I ordered a .425" high post for the 24" barreled rifle in 44 magnum. I should be able to set my Williams peep sight somewhere near center of its adjustment range and go from there.

That Williams... Foolproof or 5D? Just wondering.

Without looking at the gun, just looking at their website and recalling what's what, I'm pretty sure it's the FP (because of the micrometer click adjustment.) I have two-one is a standard (on my 44 magnum Model 94) and one is the TK model (target knobs) on my 30-30 model 94.

Great sights. My grandfather had one on his early 20th century model 94 in 30-30. Killed deer every year for 40 years. Fed my father and his siblings through the great depression with it. My uncle still hunts with it.

Yeah, Williams makes a good sight... I'm thinking the FP's less aggravating to zero compared to the 5-D. I wasn't aware they'd been in production that long.

I'm not certain when my grandfather put his on his gun. He may not have been using it during the depression. It just seemed to my dad that the sight was always on the gun.
