After loading a few hundred rounds of mixed headstamp .45 I noticed there were a few that were hard to prime. I took the the brass out of the shell holder and noticed the brass was Win NT. I read a few threads on various boards and they stated that a large pistol primer will not fit and to use a small pistol primer. Well in my case a LP primer did fit, but it went in pretty tight. I'm currently loading win LP primer, 4.7gr Win231, 230 lead round nose bullet. OAL 1.23.

Is this safe to fire or should I pull the 20 or so bullets with NT marked brass?

How did you get that Large Pistol Primer in there? Crush it in? Pop them all out and get some Small Pistol Primers...Use safety glasses when you punch them out. I doubt that any will go off, but you never know. Large primers into a small hole? Wow!!

Before you follow The Bushmaster's advice, which is normally very good, check to make sure which Winchester NT brass you have. The very first ones did in fact use a large pistol primer, but were crimped in place, the same as military brass. They also have a very large flash hole, which won't affect the load, but looks funny, if you're not used to it. You may have large pistol primed NT brass, so just check it. The only additional case preparation you would need to do is remove the primer crimp.

In answer to your question, yes, it's safe to shoot.

Hope this helps.

I figured it was good to go since I was able to get a LP primer in there. I think that if it was a SP primer pocket there would be no way to get a LP primer in there.

Oh Darn...I hate learning something new at my age. I might forget it...I do remember having some Winchester cases with large pockets and large flash holes. Can't remember if they were NT though...

Just got back from the gun/reloading room. The large flash hole/large primer pocket cases are marked Winchester .45 ACP. No NT on the head stamp...

I have a huge bag of Winchester WinClean brass from about 10 years ago, with large primer pocket, and a large flash hole. I don't think WinClean is on the market anymore, it may have been replaced with NT which uses a small primer.

So the verdict is that since I was able to get a LP primer seated they're good to go? I didnt think a LP would fit into a SP hole no matter how much you tried.

You're good to go. Without some serious removal of metal, you can't get a large pistol primer into a small pistol primer pocket.

Hope this helps.
