Some of these old Winchester pumps had one fatal flaw that has killed more then one person due to a ND.

The problem comes when you unload the mag tube by dumping the cartridges out the front of the tube.

More often then not, one round remains stuck in the carrier and won't come out until the action is cycled again.

A man killed his grandson in the Cabalas parking lot a few years ago, unloading and clearing one he took there to sell.

So, I have my fathers 06 that does it, a 62A that doesn't, and an 1890 .22 WCF that doesn't.

I also have another almost new 06 action, and when I put the trigger group on the other rifle receiver, all the rounds dump out normally.

I have measured everything in the two carrier's forwards, backwards, and sideways, and can find no measurable difference in them!!

Any ideas??
Or ever heard of a fix??

rc, no idea about your Winchesters. Back in the olden days (1959 or so), a friend had a nice Marlin Mountie 39. We roamed the prairies of eastern Colorado together. I watched him unload the Marlin once and noticed a round that failed to "dump" after he pulled the magazine tube. He was convinced he had an empty rifle. After that, we always double checked his Marlin and my Remington pump.

Regards.

No clue, but a friend, smith, reloader etc. listed his collection of rifles for sale and offered two of us if we wanted to view his sale.

He had several slide action 22s, I picked up one and operated the slide, I then operated the slide again, when I opened the slide the second time I ejected a round that had chambered. I slid the slide back and another round was ejected. The third time I operated the slide I checked to see if another round was going to be loaded, nothing. I stood the rifle in a corner and looked at something else.

The rifle was picked up again by someone else, they opened the slide and ejected another round. I purchased the rifle, took it home and started taking it apart. Someone had lubed the rifle, that included the tube with heavy grease. The tube spring would push the bullets down the tube slowly.

Will the last cartridge come out if you shake it with the muzzle pointed down? It might be just barely catching on the mag tube opening when it comes out of the carrier. I don't know if slightly polishing or beveling that would help.

The other possibility is the carrier isn't being held down all the way by the bolt. The pressure of the mag spring can push the round into the carrier but then the carrier lifts up slightly. Weld up and fit the carrier.

No, you can't shake it out.

I may just take the other carrier out of the good action and put it in the old rifle and see if it still works.

Maybe switch bolts too because the whole newer trigger group in the old rifle works fine.

I think I fixed it!

(Operator Error!)

I took it apart one more time and got down & dirty with the inside of the shell carrier.

Rough rings that looked like machining marks catching the case rims.

I wound some brass wool on a .22 bore brush and spun it up in a cordless drill with solvent.

Turns out it was 100 year old bullet lube and dirt rings catching the case rims.

The hole in the carrier is smooth as glass now, and shells dump out just fine!!

rcmodel.....I think I fixed it!

That's why we ask you for advice as you seem to have the answers. It's nice when you can fix something without having to chase parts.
