Hi folks, looking for information on an issue I've had with my Winchester 1300.

Yesterday I was the first shooter on the first stage of my local gun clubs 3-gun match. After two rounds, the 1300 action froze. Couldn't move it. Had to take it back to a safe area an pull the gun apart.

I discovered that the firing pin had ejected it's self from the back of the bolt carrier and was stuck up under the bolt carrier.

I discovered that half of the retention ring on the firing pin was broken off.

I've found a new firing pin on line and will order one in a day or so.

Any one seen anything like this before with the 1300.

Thanks,

hhmmm..first I have heard of a problem with the 1300 firing pin. Could have been just a freak failure. Have owned several and still own one of the 1300 shotguns. There are differences in the bolt design through the years. Do you know if yours is an early or late version? Kudos to "Kirby The Gunsmith" who years ago sent me pictures of the bolt changes on the 1300 when I was doing some work.

Let me suggest this thread for a picture and informational help...

Thanks for the link to the thread. I have the bolt assembly without the screw. I've ordered a new firing pin and I will keep my fingers crossed. I've got a new semi-auto on order for games, but had hoped to keep the 1300 around. Not sure if I can trust it as much now.

Have to know why the FP failed.
Was it poor metallurgy (defect or process issue)?
Mis machined?
Was another component a problem that influenced the FP failure?

If it was just a bad FP, replacement should make it fine, for a long long time.
Assuming the replacement part is to spec and all other components are as well.

You gotta watch it getting old parts for old guns. Some really old and obscure rigs..........the only parts still available, might all be from a suspect lot (possibly how that wonderful bag full of nowhere else to be found parts was a full bag to start with).

You get burned like that you just have one made.

First I've heard of a firing pin failure on a 1300. That pin seems pretty beefy to me.

I need to get a 12 gauge for a second shotgun and I'm really considering picking up a 1300 Defender.

I do see the appeal of the 500 and the 870 cause of availability but the 1300 seems to have the smoothest action out of any shotgun I've ever handled.

That being said the lack of a hinging loading gate on the 500 really interests me. Which is the easiest gun to do things like slug changeovers with?
