I understand why the O.P. wants a 44 Russian chambered rifle. I would like to have a '66 chambered in 44 Colt to match my Conversion revolvers. It would be fun to have a rifle that you can load on Sunday and shoot all week. However two things stand in the way.

First is reliability of the gun. I know the shorter 44 Colt can be fired in 44 Special handguns with no problems but I have not found enough information as to how well they will feed in a unaltered 44 Special Henry or Yellowboy. The longer lifter and shorter round does not seem like a good combination.

Second is $$$. Uberti rifles are not cheap anymore. A 44 Special may be even more due to demand. Then finding a good gunsmith that would be willing to tackle the project. The barrel would need to be set back for a shorter chamber, lifter modified and then timing issues.

I have a AR build on the desk to occupy my money for a while.

Me too! I think that would make a great pair. I was simply going to get a .44Spl 1866 and see if .44Colt works in it.

Anybody try calling Cimarron yet?

A little off topic, but which is the more powerful of the two cartridges a 44-40 or 45 colt?
Traditionally, the .45Colt. Compare a 250gr at 950fps vs a 200gr at about the same velocity (handgun velocities). Nowadays, it's a wash as most .44-40's are setup for .430" bullets and you can load a 240gr at the same velocity. That is, as long as we're talking about standard pressure loads.

You can shoot .44Russian in a .44Spl chamber but that's not what you asked.

Every time I've called Cimarron to ask about .44Spl 1866's and 1873's, they've been out of stock.
I know that wasn't my question, and I knew about the 44sp being able to fire 44 russian. It was just a question about 44-40 and 44 russian.
