I have the opportunity to buy a Winchester 1895 in .270 Winchester.

Anyone know anything about these? Also is 800 good for a new one?

Yes, its a reproduction. I hope to have it to convert it to 35 whelen. I know they do it to the 30-06 versions. Can it be done to the 270 version?

Those are real nice rifles. 800 is a good price.
Yes the rifle can be made into a 35 whelen it's based off the 3006 case, just like the 270 was.

Zhat customs in Casper Wy has done a lot of them.
Might contact Steve Rhoades in Phoenix at Arizona sharpshooters dot com , for some info on getting it done a little more local for you.

So I sent an email to a gunsmith i know of he said the cost would be about 1000 dollars and take a year. From what I've been told, he is extremely busy.

A year wait is not at all uncommon for a good gunsmith.

Conversion from 270 to 35 Whelen should just be a rebore and rifling if I remember correctly. There is a fellow in Prescott that should be able to handle that chore. A year, not that bad of a wait, especially if he is any good.

I have an 1895 that was reworked from 30 US to 405 WCF. It handles fine, allowing me to load from blackpowder ballistics to full factory specs and all in between. In truth, I tend to only run it at blackpowder levels or a little more, not many rhinos or lions wandering around where I live.

Sometimes tho a person really needs to do the math. It's not out of reason to find 95's already rebarreled, and sometimes even in pristine condition such as a 35 Winchester I saw last fall for 12-1500.
With enough diligent searching within a years time and about the same money a person can have 2 rifles for the price of having 1 rebarreled.
