Is there that much difference between the two cartiges? I'm looking at buying a new rifle and the only difference I see between the two is the 270 wsm is a slightly higher mussel volisity and about a $100 difference in price. Anyone have any good suggestions?

The WSM is shorter, hence a "short action" cartridge like the .308. This is touted as reducing the amount of time between shots, but I doubt it would make a difference for 99% of users. I think performance is also pretty much the same for the what the vast majority of us would be using it for. It's about 200 fps faster, shoots a little flatter.

I personally avoid the WSM calibers simply because it's usually easier to find the standard rounds as opposed to the WSM variants. Also, and I could certainly be wrong about this, I think that since it's a smaller casing, the pressures are higher and the powder more potent to get similar performance. I'm seeing quite a few new calibers that perform similarly to existing cartridges but have smaller cases because of better powders, metals, etc. My feeling is...why? It seems to just be a marketing game played by manufacturers. You'll also find more .270 Win rifles used and new to choose from, more brass if you reload, and other accessories.

Could also be I just don't like change. :)

I bought a .270 WSM in a Win Ultimate Shadow for cheap to take to Africa. VERY good factory loads with super premium bullets are available for it , and it is very accurate and extremely powerful. I will use it like a Snap-On tool!
I didn't want to risk my 1953 Winchester .270 shipping to Africa, as I would never part with the best deer gun ever made!

"...simply because it's usually easier to find the standard rounds..." Yep. Look into local availablity of the WSM ammo first. Smaller places will have .270 Win, but may not have the WSM. Not a big deal close to home, but it can be if you get off on your hunt of a life time only to find you left your ammo on the kitchen table. Even if you are reloading.
