Sorry - typo - that should, of course, have read Winchester .357 magnum 94AE cartridge lifters

In the letter pages of this month's British NRA magazine there was a letter claiming that this rifle has a known problem with the alloy cartridge lifter (carrier) component breaking. The letter goes on to state that with the demise of Winchester these parts have become unavailable. I must confess I was unaware of this and have had no problems. However, that doesn't mean to say it isn't true.

Does anyone know / experienced that this is true? Are the replacement parts truly unavailable? I find it kind of hard to believe that after all the years of Winchester making this style of rifle that you cannot get hold of these parts now. Surely there must be loads on shelves all over American outlets?

Currently mine is fine but I'm concerned that I ought to be looking to get some spares just in case. The letter mentions that one chap has sourced a firearms engineer in the UK with a view to getting a bulk order made up from steel for about £45 GBP

I was wondering whether this has been done Stateside already? If so does anyone know who might supply the reproduced part?

As far as I'm aware the British company requires a reasonable bulk order to make this a viable proposition and won't actually start manufacturing them until that is met. So if my lifter breaks tomorrow my Winchester will be out of action indefinitely. I'm looking to future proof against that.

I have one in .44 and I haven't noticed anything unusual with the action on it. It may be possible to make it malfunction if you make incomplete strokes with the lever repeatedly but you'd be trying to make it miss. You can watch what is happening easily and see that a full, uninterupted, open and closed lever action should make for a very reliable cycle.
