Winchester 760

OK, I screwed up and accidentally ordered 8 pounds of Winchester 760 instead of 748. I wanted 748 as a “do-all” powder for my 223, 243, and 308. I see that this is the powder Winchester recommends for the 243, but is it that bad a powder for the 308? I'll be using 168 Sierra Matchkings for the 308 and I do have load data for it. I don't see any loads listed for the 223 so I'll use what little 748 I have left on that one. I'll have to buck up and place another order for powder for the 223. I don't shoot the 243 that much and it would take a long time to use up that much 760 in just that caliber alone. So is this powder a “doable” powder for the 308?

W760 will work in both the 243 & 308. It isn`t the "powder of choice" in either but data is readly available for most bullet wgts. W760 is very similar, some say the same, as H414. I have used 760 with fairly good results in my 708 and 30-06 in the past.

760 will work...but it depends alot on your barrel length, I believe...its nautrally a slower powder than 748 and will leave your bore a bit more fouled I believe...again, this all depends on your barrel length...


I have used it in my 308 bolt rifle and it works relatively fine...mine has a 24" barrel...most 308 bolt rifles I think use 22" however....

You should be able to get away with using it no problem....

The gun was bought back in '94. It's a Remington 700 Varmint gun with the fluted barrel. I think it has the 26” barrel. My old Sierra 2nd edition book lists 49.8grs of 760 for 2600 fps. New Sierra load data lists 49.2grs for 2600. I was using 44grs of 748 but was never able to test it as the scope on the gun is bad. New scope, but the weather has been bad every day I've been off for last two weeks. Rain and windy. I'll give it a try. I still have 60 rounds loaded with 748 to test it against. I plan to get the scope on track with mil surp rounds and then test the ammo.

W760 in .308

I have had good results with W760 in the .308 with 165/8 gn and 180 gn Hornady bullets, Win. case and Win LR primers. Gun is a 16-1/2" bbl Rem. 788. It is dirty like db_tanker says, but not as bad as one would expect with such a short bbl.

but I inherited some 760 last month and made up a few loadds for my M1 with Federal Match primers and Sierra 155 gr Palma Match bullets. I was surprised at the nice groups. Can't imagine why it wouldn't work well in .308. Plus, it meters like water.

This is good to hear. I thought this thread had died. I'll probably work up some loads when it warms up a little. Or at least wait until it's not so muddy. I've shot most of my rounds up trying to get this scope problem figured out. Turns out it was my mounts. I still don't have it sighted in. I wanted to sight it in with the rounds loaded with the 748 to compare to but I might not have enough left. Thanks for the info.

My Mauser is a one holer in 308 with 52 grains of 760 and a 150 Sierra Game King.

I now have a whole bunch of one pound cans of stuff I won't use because this is the one.

I used 760 in a Rem. 700 V. The rifle used a 12X scope and was chambered in 308. It was a tack driver with a 150 gr. Nosler. I chose this powder because it metered so well......Creeker

706 in "short" calibers

Have no fear of the 760 in your 308.

I've been using WW760 with excellent results for years in several calibers. It works very well, giving decent to excellent groups in my .243 (24" bbl) , 7x57 (22' bbl) and 7.62x54R (20" bbl). 760 doesn't seem to be a "popular" powder locally, but I've know a few people when I wasw in the service who considered it their "go-to" powder and used it in anything.

It's the 2nd-best powder for my 7.62 (it has a slight preference for H4895) but if I had a bunch of 760 I'd definitley use it, especially as with 760 you can just set the measure and throw the loads without weighing them...one of the reasons I LOVE ball powders and always try them first when developing new loads. Yeah, I'm pretty lazy

One note though: 760 IS a hot burning powder, so I'd avaid using it in a gass-operated semi-auto...748 is specially made cool-burning to protect the cylinder and piston which is part of why it is so popular in .308.
