Win 748 for 308 Winchester?

I've used Win. 748 in the 308 Win. & it worked OK but IMR 4064 worked better for me so that's what I use. Varget would probably ge another good choice.

What bullet? There are a number of loads for 308 and W748 that work fine, and it meters really well.

WW 748 can shoot quite well in the .308 Win or 7,62mm NATO cartridges, but it is much better with lighter bullets, say 168 grains or less. I had a National Match M1-A that liked that powder really well with Sierra 168 gr MatchKings. 150 grain hunting bullets would work quite well, too.

Assuming commercial 308 brass:

Code:
Cartridge : .308 Win.
Bullet : .308, 150, Hornady SST InterLock 30302
Cartridge O.A.L. L6: 2.800 inch or 71.12 mm
Barrel Length : 24.0 inch or 610.0 mm
Powder : Winchester 748

Predicted data by increasing and decreasing the given charge,
incremented in steps of 1.124% of nominal charge.
CAUTION: Figures exceed maximum and minimum recommended loads !

Win748 was the "original" "ball" powder propellent and was developed for the .308(7.62x51mm).
Hence it is well adapted to the cartridge. Best results will come with 147-150gr bullets as was intended.

Win748 is actually near identical to BL-C2. Difference between the two has more to do with variations between lot#s.

My best accuracy with the .308 has been with IMR4064, Varget and RL-15. However, best velocities have been with BL-C2 (or 748).

For the 165-168gr bullets, IMR4064 has been the "winner".

I use 748 exlusively in my .308, after messing around with Varget, 760, H4350, RL 15 and a couple of others. Nothing wrong with any of them, but my rifle seems to like 748 and 180gr bullets.

I shot this group with 43 gr of 748 and a Hornady 180gr Interlock SP. After one shot to try and get to the bull, three shots went into one hole at 100 yards, and measures .229" from center to center.

It's my all .308 powder and I have been thrilled with it. I'm not sure why people are saying it's a 165gr and up powder...it may be better for that, it's just my Weatherby Vanguard and 180gr bullets seem to do well with it.

I use the Barnes 180gr XLC and 44gr of 748 as my elk hunting load. When I run out of XLC I'll use up my 180gr Fail Safes. This load took down two elk this year.
