I have heard / read that a firing pin for a pre '64 Winchester 94 will fit and work in a top ejecting post '63 94 but not the other way around due to the cut in the former.

Is this correct or false ? I'm mainly wanting to know if the more abundant and after market pre '64 pins will work in the post '63 top ejecting 94's

Thanks.

I know the differences in the two as I stated. The question was if anyone had experienced, first hand knowledge if the pre will fit and work in the post.

Col, are you saying you think a post will fit in the pre ? How can that be sans the cut out in the post ?

Is this something you have hands on experience with ? If so, I'd be interested in your findings.

FWIW , below is a post from a member @ Shooters Forum in response to a question raised from someone else :

robert,

" The firing pins for the Pre-64's are different than the Post -64s and those are different from the Angle Ejects.
The biggest difference between the Pre and Post 64's is the lack of cut out for the retaining pin on the Post 64 models.
A Pre 64 firing pin will probably fit a Post 64 rifle, but not conversely. "

The problem is this opinion too is a " probably " . I'm hoping someone will come forth who knows for certain one way or another due to him trying it. I would think than in the 50 years since the post '63 rifles have been with us that someone has .

I guess this is a really dumb question, but if you need a firing pin, why not get the one that is correct for your rifle and not worry about what else might or might not work?

That's what I thought too.

I just didn't say it.

Then I kinda got my fillings hurt when I posted pictures of them both and kinda got snarked.

Oh well, I tried to help.
But I'm not going to get in a argument after pointing out the obvious.

And where to buy the correct one.

Jim,

Yours was not a dumb question at all.

As stated in my original post the pins for just the post '63's are becoming difficult to find, are more costly than the pins for the pre and I have not found where aftermarket pins are made for them as is the case for the pre's. As of this time I don't need one but if and when that time comes knowing what options are available can only be a plus. All I wanted to know and the only question I asked was if the pre's work in the posts.

Geo,
The post firing pin is the same overall length as the pre. The post can be modified to match match the retaining profile of the earlier pin and utilized in said rifle. I have done this in two cases when the parts were not readily available. The steel itself is pretty hard. Grinding will need to be done slowly and methodically to prevent overheating and changing structural characteristics. The old pin can be used as a template to modify the new. Hope this helps.
