Looking through the scope at a coyote
I've had several .223 cases split vertically on the case neck after the first firing. I'd say the failure rate is 4 per 100. Another 10 per 100 show signs that the failure is imminent. To top it off, a brand new case that I had FL resized yesterday was split.

Anybody else seeing this?

My R-P brass doesn't do it with all other variables being the same.

Bad lot of brass.

Your only chance of salvaging them is probably annealing the necks.

I'd have to check the numbers on the bags to see if it is one lot# in question, as the cases are out of probably 3 different 100 round bags. I only noticed it when I tumbled my once fireds.

The new case was definitely from a different bag (not sure about lot). I know this because I opened the bag the other day, and all the once-fireds were loaded over 6 months ago.

I'm not concerned about salvaging them so much. I just have to make extra sure all the new brass is good to go now. I inspect anyway, but now I've got a real focus on all of my Winchester Brass. I have probably 1000 more new cases.

I only have about 500 R-P new, and I have 2K of once fired LC.

Almost forgot.

I also noticed that on 2 pieces of brass, the primer pocket was WAY off axis. Noticeably offset to one side.

I'm not knocking Winchester brass completely, mind you. I've made some very accurate varmint ammo with it, and am happy for the most part.

Some of my bigger calibers use Winchester cases, and I have made very nice ammo with them too.

I just wonder if others have seen these kinds of issues as much as I seem to have bumped into them recently.

I had 7 in one bag of win brass. I emailed them about it. They sent ups to pick up the brass and bag, then 3 weeks later then sent me a $10 coupon. I caught the bad ones before i had done any sizing.

Winchester Brass

22-250, loaded 40 out of the 100 bag and split the first 3 cases I fired. I thought they might have been too heavy on powder and pulled a few bullets and weighed the charge, and it was fine. Then I loaded them with another powder at a reduced load and split those.

Emailed Winchester, and they picked up the brass and sent another bag of 100. Only problem, I had to pull the remaining 35 bullets and de-prime to send the brass back.

They could have sent a $10 coupon for the trouble, but I guess I should be satisfied they replaced the brass.

I have always found that Winchester brass seemed to have very tight
primer pockets; more so, than any other brand~!

I would agree, based on my limited experience. Federal can get pretty loose, but other than that, I like F C brass.

Have you seen any offset primer pockets on Winchester brass?

Another good reason to keep your components separated by lots. Doing so, you could better determine if it was only out of one lot.
