I bought an original High Wall musket chambered for the 45-70 today. Never seen one in 45-70 before. I just wonder how rare they really are. Anybody in here that know?

Thank you and have a great day

I haven't found a caliber breakdown for the High Wall, but .45-70 was the mililtary caliber during its heyday so I would think it reasonably common. There is a tendency to think of those as was said about Webleys, "They never made two alike." Not true of either Winchester single shots or Webleys, but there are so many variations and extras for those guns that there seems to be no "standard" caliber or configuration. I suspect most were special ordered rather than "off the rack" purchases.

Great gun, though. I think we would like to see pictures.

Not as many made as we're the sporting guns. Hang onto it, and get thee a bayonet. You'll need it for pig hunting; especially if the Army isn't around to drop mortar rounds on that charging boar.

Here it is, not the one I got, but it looks exactly like that. To the spot.

I guess getting a bayonet is a wise thing to do. You never know when a moose gets too close...

Very fun rifle, as jim said there are a lot of variations. I do believe 45 gov is fairly rare but not sure why. It seems like it would be the ideal choice. A bayonet is a must, what good is a rifle without a sword on the end.

Just found out that there where made about 355 High Wall muskets chambered for the 45 gov. Some even had a spirit level on the rear sight. Found an image.
