Winchester Mod 12

I've a 1936 Mod. 12, 30" Barrrel, Full Choke (7007xx series SN); I'm consdiering curring it down and putting modified choke on it. Will this harm it's value? Some low life stole my dads Ithica Featherlite recently... need a replacement. It (Mod. 12) belonged to my uncle; he shot many a duck under it! (It's got 19 ribs on the slide.... I've seen alot of hoop tee-do from folks trying to masque later productions; on false pretenses) Can one verify the birthdate of a model 12 from the ribs in the slide? ... Did Win. make a ribbed barell in 1936?
