I'm wondering if any experts out there venture an opinion. I have a first year manufacture August 1933. It has a standard slide and old style stock pistol grip however...........it apparently has custom /special checkering on the stock?? I count 19 (or 20?) per inch. Any guess as to whether original Winchester shop or? Certainly looks to be age appropriate but I wonder.

I need to check my Winchester books. From the one photo I don't believe the metal has been refinished. All of the edges on the receiver look absolutely sharp with no softness from possible sanding. Also looks like a 28barrel (probably full choke?). That looks like a Winchester pattern to me but the wood might have been "refreshed". Suggest that you contact Roger Bain at :

In Waynesboro, PA. Roger is as close to a Winchester expert that I know. I would give him a call and send the photos. A friend of mine who is a non-FFL dealer had a first year 42 in the original Winchester box at PG Shooting Center where Dave and I shoot about a month ago. It had never been assembled. ]Asking price: $17.500.00.

I would definitely look into this much more carefully. Tom

Damn, That is a nice shotgun. Makes my grandfather's old 42 I inherited look absolutely beat to hell. That's OK though, I still love mine. I hope we find out the answer to the question.
