I inherited a Winchester model 50 and was wondering if there was any special interest or anything otherwise remarkable about this particular model? The finish on this one isn't in great shape so I was thinking of using it as a truck gun but I don't want to do that if it's some rare or special specimin.

It's not special unless it's custom engraved. I inherited my grandfathers when he passed a few years ago. Nothing remarkable about it. He killed thousands of quail and pheasant in Kansas and Nebraska. And it still works. But to me, it's priceless.

It's a very light recoiling gun. I inherited my Dad's, I used to use it with slugs for deer but now it's just my turkey gun.

So am I safe in assuming that the barrel length isn't critical to function? I'm wanting to lop off a good bit of the length, but I'm not going to risk it if it would make it stop cycling.

You are correct, it's known as a "short" recoiling system and all the magic happens from the bolt on back.
