I have a chance to pick up a Winchester Model 70 22.250 w/ bull barrel. I dont know much about this model my questionis whats the pros and cons of the Win 70?

Asquires2;

Before anybody can give you anything like accurate information, you'll have to provide the board with more information. There are several different determining points with Winchester model 70's that can significantly affect the value.

1. Pre WWII?
2. Post WWII, to 1952.
3. Pre 1964
4. USRAC gun
5. FN New Haven gun
6. Current production gun

Anything pre-64 will have a Mauser type claw extractor, but will be right hand bolt only, blue steel and wood only. Many post 64 guns are push feed without the claw & bring less money. Is it a wood stock, or synthetic? Stainless steel, or blue?

As you can see, your original question is like asking: "Hey, I've got a Ford, what's it worth?"

LOL I get your drift! Im tryin to get more info from the owner as we speak. Once I get it Ill post my findings.

22-250 is THE only ammo I see with any regularity. Not that that should influence your decision. But, it's something to consider.

I finally got the serial numbers off the gun : g2048403. From what I was told the gun has only had 8 boxes put through it and I was also told the Model 70's that were mad in New Haven wasnt as good as the ones made in South Carolina, is there any truth to this and could someone tell me the history of this gun through the serial number?

Some of the info isn't all correct. When they re introduced the Classic action in the early 90's they started using some of the numbers that were unsused.

I would say, if the current owner will let you shoot it, let that be your determining factor.

The New Haven guns were just like most all of the other manfacturers every now and then a lemon comes through the line. But, there were more of them (heresay) that came from Winchester in the last few years of their operation before they closed.

I've had some of the later ones that shot just as good as anything else.

As far as the ones made on South Carolina, couldn't tell ya. I've only looked at them on the racks. I do know that the FN plant where they are made has very rigid QC in place, as they are making weapons for the Gov't, etc.
