Hello all, I have a winchester model 74 22LR that my father owned and it is jammed. The safety is stuck on "F", the bolt wont move more than 1/4", the trigger does nothing and I can't get the bolt to come out (which I have sucessfully done 50+ times). It is jammed as hell and I havn't touched it for a few months..

Does anyone have any ideas to unjam it? I remember a spent shell was stuck in the chamber, i pulled it out and walked home, when i got home the bolt wouldn't budge.

I also inherited a model 74.22 short from my grandfather, it was bought by my great grandfather some time ago.. I havn't used it, and it hasn't been used in years (decades?). It is a .22 short with a peep sight, the bolt mechanism is different from the LR version. The question I have is, what year would a serial #47XX have been manufactured? I don't see any other numbers on it, that has to be the serial.

It is in beautiful condition, could it have been one of the first few thousand produced? What would this be worth? I'm not looking to sell, just curious.

I appreciate any input

p.s. the search function on this site in impossible...

yeah, check over on rfc. as for the 22 short only model, I can only tell you this; it is automatically worth a lot more; generally a very nice model rifle, that is a 22 lr- lets say for laughs and giggles is nice condition, has some years on it, so it is worth 300 bucks. a 22 short only model of the same rifle, in the same condition, is going to bring about an extra 100 to 200 bucks, depending on the rareity of the rifle. And then again, if it was ever a 'gs' model, which means Gallery Special, you can jack up the price another 100 to 200 bucks. Gallery specials were typically rifles made specifically to be shot at gun gallery ranges, back in the old days of traveling circuses, and other traveling road shows, from the 40's through the 60's.
Kids and adults alike would take these rifles, and try to shoot out the ' star' in the center of a piece of paper, trying to win a stuffed animal or some such thing. Usually these rifles got so worn out, and beat up, that it is hard to find a working model of a gs rifle, and gets even better, the better the condition, or if it is pristine, and somehow never made it to that traveling road show, but ended up in one of the mgrs' gun closets!!!

hmm, im not sure if it would be a gs model, but im excited to own a short model in good condition =)

i tried to register at rimfirecentral but i cannot since the only email address i have is hotmail (my gmail doesnt work either, those bastards!). i do not appreciate that from a website... though i think thr made me jump through hoops, too.

thanks for the replies

even a crap shorts only model, that is working, proly starts at 250, even if it looks like hell. Lemme ask you this; do you know if yours is a takedown version?
Because that automatically adds value as well. Like you pull back on a button, on the side of the receiver, or their is a big screw on one side of the receiver, and you turn it, and suddenly you can twist the bbl, and off it comes from the receiver? Because a takedown, well... thats just mo' money...

for instance, I have this rifle right here, and mine looks like total hell, but it works. Mine is also a shorts only model(money), and it is a gs model(mo' money). If you look at the 8th and 12th pic, you see that button sticking out?
You pull it backwards about 1/8 th of an inch, grab the bbl, twist it 1/4 turn, and out it comes.

Look at the 6th pic down here; it comes apart and looks like this.

or if it is a winny, it may have a screw, protruding to grab with your fingers, to turn and loosen, and then yours will come apart like this; that is, if it is a takedown model at all!!!

it is not a takedown model, just a low serial, i think. i just dont wanna jam this one up =)

i read somewhere that cocking the gun in safety will cause a jam,i dont remember if this is what happened to my LR or not.
