Winchester Model 94, Pre 64

I have a model 94 in 30-30, that according to the serial number was made 1943 - 1948. It is in extremely good cond the stock has diamond inlays and fleur de lis checkering on the stock, any idea what is worth?

That stock doesn't sound like anything Winchester ever turned out, at least in that era, though I could be wrong. If it was custom work, done after-market, it just about eliminates any collector interest. An ordinary Model 94 carbine of that era in good shape would bring, at retail, around $400-600 depending on the amount of finish and whether there is a box and/or accessories. If the stock is not original, the price would be more like $250 as a hunting gun.

Why "pre 64 model 94"?

I understand the "pre-64" model 70 because there was a radical change. But, correct me if I am wwrong, the model 94 did not undergo a radical change in 1964, did it?

I am not sure it was actually in the calendar year 1964, but the 94 changed rather radically around that time. The receiver was cast instead of milled from solid, the link pin was changed to a roll pin and the screw eliminated, the mainspring was changed to a coil spring, etc., and the whole gun was cheapened in appearance. While the post-64 guns were just as accurate as ever, a lot of the "Winchester aura" was gone. The changes to the 94 were not as radical or as obvious as those to the revered Model 70, there was no doubt that there had been an end to an era.

I have been looking at some from the 1920s, the 1930s and 1940s. The dealer is asking $350.00 to 400 apiece. They are in very nice condition.

94 winchester

I believe the 94 has always been a forged and then machined receiver. Sometime in the post 64 there was an alloy used that would not take conventional bluing satisfactory, but has always been a forged part.
