My model 94 was made in 1964. So it is not pre 64, but it is not "post 64" . I guess Post 64 is a misnomer and it should just be 64 and after. How can you tell by looking whether it is a pre 64? I don't memorize sn's very well. What in a store will give it away?

Ed, any Winchester Model 94 with a serial number of 2700000 or greater was made in 1964 or later. This was the beginning of the 'post-'64' era for the Model 94. Hope this helps!

Well,

I'm not the best Winchester historian

but, if it's a claw extractor, it's the more desireable one

post 64's (up to recent production) were push feed

Redneck2, my guess is you're referring to the Model 70 bolt action rifle, not the Model 94 lever action rifle which Ed originally asked about. For a Winchester Model 70, the last to be manufactured in 1963 had a serial number of 581471. Winchester then began production in 1964 using serial number 700000 on the Model 70. Hope this helps!

Not sure,but......

I believe the "better" ones had a screw head visible just forward of the lever/trigger guard,on the "toggle".hope these names make some sense.:)
