You don't need a SN to tell. I assume you're talking about the model 70. In 1964 Winchester went to PF rifles. The pre-64's are all CRF. They didn't bring back CRF until 1994 and all 1994-2006 rifles are marked as "Winchester Classics". None were made 2007 and production started agin in late 2008 with FN made rifles. The new FN rifles do not say "Made in New Haven CT USA" on them. They are marked. ----MADE IN USA, BACO INC. MORGAN UTAH----.
It is easy to tell a pre-64 from a 1994 and newer gun just at a glance with no SN. The stock designs are very different as well as the type of finish.
