Hi all. My son, 18, recieved a very nice 870 Wing Master 12 guage when his grandpa passed. We went out to bust some clay pigeons for the first time with it the other day. When bringing up the gun to fire, the stock doesn't let you get your eye low enough to look down the vent rib. Is it called the comb? It seems too high. What can be done with this? My 870 Express stock has no problem. I'm not a shot gun guy but this is a very nicely finished trap or skeet gun. Could it have been custom fitted for gramps? What are some solutions? New stock, altering this stock? Where would you have this fitted and built at for my son? Any info would be greatly appreciated, thanks,

My google-fu was weak while trying to find a picture. Trap guns are normally set up to shoot high. It sounds like there might be a standard comb trap stock on the gun. I would take the recoil pad off and see how the hole for attachment bolt compares to your express. If it is a trap stock and you want it to shoot flat, then a different stock is in order.

This is just a guess. Do you have any pictures of the gun? Is it marked 870TB on the receiver?

Yup, those trap stocks are a bit higher than a normal stock. Hitting up eaby and finding a used stock would probably be your best bet. Or, just learn how to shoot it the way it is.

I'm at work so no pics now and I don't remember the exact model no. Thanks for the replies, will try to get more info. Thanks again.

From what pics I've searched for, it probably is a TB. I know little about trap and skeet, but from what I understand is that trap guns are set up so the shot pattern is above point of aim for rising targets? I learned that about 2 min. ago searching around on here. Also don't know the difference between trap and skeet. In a nutshell, what's the best way to learn how shoot the gun as is?

870s are the shotgun equivalent of Legos. No need to shoot it as is, if it doesn't fit the shooter and the need- just swap the stock for one that fits better. You can get used 870 stocks all over (eBay, Gunbroker etc) or get a new one from Remington (1-800-243-9700).

And if it is a TB or TC, the wood is nice enough not to try altering the original stock - you can put it back on later and it will be a TB or TC again.

BTW, get hands on this thing, read the markings on the receiver and barrel, and make sure just exactly what it is you have here...

Before I did anything I would call Remington to find out when the Wingmaster was made. Then ask if they could send you a drawing of the checkering for the Wingmaster stock for that time frame. Then hit ebay and other gun auction sites to find a properly checkered stock for your specific Wingmaster. It may be a bit costly but it would be period correct.

Okay, just got home and it doesn't appear to be anything super special. It has pressed checkering and just says Wingmaster model 870. Ser. No. is
T221XXXV if that helps. It has a full choke 30" barrel. The front "bead" on top of the vent rib is about a 5" tube with what looks like a 1" orange fiber optic opening on the front top. Still a very nice gun about 95% or better condition. It's just strange to me that I can't get my eye down far enough to sight down the rib because of the stock keeping my cheek bone too high. Wish I could post a pic but I'm sure you all know what I'm trying to describe. A different stock may be in order though.

a morgen adjustable recoil pad may be in order. i have them on all my clay game shotguns. remingtons are bad for me as my cheek bone takes a pounding when shooting 100 rounds and the morgen does the trick for me. eastbank.
