Wish all the antis would watch these!

Antis won't watch these, or view/read/listen to anything else that doesn't agree with their (warped) worldview. They are, as a group, the most closed-minded people on Earth, for who logic and historical facts are inconvenient stumbling blocks instead of honored tools.

You're far better off taking a fence-sitter to the range and teaching them how to shoot, letting them see how responsible and decent most gun owners are, etc.

I used to be an "anti" until the late 90's because I had swallowed all of the false information put out by the media and politicians. I wanted to understand why the NRA and gun owners were so stubborn and opposed to "reasonable" gun control. So I read a few articles, and a few books, and a few more articles, and a few more books.

I eventually saw the light and am now in favor of dismantling almost ALL "gun control" laws. I am living proof that people can apply critical thinking skills and learn that they have been lied to by the media and politicians.

I think that's the crux: the fact that we get lied to.

First you have to get it into an anti's head that the sources of their information are generally false. That's a big leap, I think, something along the lines of changing religions. Especially when one of the main tenets of your existing religion is that you are 100% correct all the time and all other points of view are lies.

Stiil missing the truth.

Some of the first things he says is wrong. Fully automatic firearms are not limited just to law enforcement and military. The normal lawabiding Citizen can and do own fully automatic firearms and about 286,000 fully automatic firearms are owned by US. He repeats that wrong statement a few times. Fully automatic firearms are legal if they are Registered.

This are terrific videos. It would be great if our government leaders watched 'em.

I think these are great, I especially like the 20/20 vid. I think we need an ad campaign. (and more media coverage) To let people know the real facts.

Some people consider changing one's mind on a particular issue a weakness - I consider it a weakness to set one's opinion in stone and see too many people, on many different issues, adopt a childlike determination to never be swayed by facts once their mind is made up.

44Brent - I have to admire you for being open-minded enough to change your stance based upon your own research.

There are basically two types of Anti's:

The ones like 44Brent, who don't have any experience/background/point of reference with firearms and get their "facts" from the Main Stream Media (TV, Newspapers) and Politicans. They generally aren't interested gun control debate, but they've been told repeatedly "Guns are bad, M'kay." Unless they get (self-)educated or get taken to the range by a gunnie, they pretty much remain that way:
I wanted to understand why the NRA and gun owners were so stubborn and opposed to "reasonable" gun control.
What some would refer to as "Useful Fools". They will vote for anti-gun candidates because Katie, Rosie etc. said to.

Then there are the Hardcore Believers: G_d, Allah, Jesus, Buddah, Mohammand, Hare Krishina, Odin, Zeus, the Flying Spaghetti Monster and every other Head Diety of all the belief systems could all come to earth at same time, hold a press conference at high noon on the US Capitol steps and each one state that "GUNS ARE GOOD, Gun Control is bad" and still, Blagojevich, Mayor Daley, Feinstein, Schumer, Clinton, Brady, et al. would be on TV an hour latter arguing that they "meant" was that we need more Gun Control. There is very little chance of changing the beliefs of a "True Believer."

44Brent, what were most the most effective pro-RKBA arguments?

This is what changed me mind:

  1. Learning that the police have no legal obligation to protect citizens.
  2. Learning about the history of genocide.

Here's what didn't work:

  1. Arguments about how "assault weapons" are used for hunting and sporting purposes.
  2. Arguments about how many shots are fired by an "assault weapon" with a single pull of the trigger.
  3. Arguments about the "lethality" of "assault weapons".

I am not claiming that it is useless to educate people on so-called "assault weapons". Once I understood the first principle of how gun-control sets societies up for genocide, then I understood why politicians would lie about so-called "assault weapons". It's because they have plans to take society in a direction that is not in my best interest.

Absolutely right, and you know why? Because they are scared of common people owning guns. They aren't concerned about gun legislation for themselves, in their perfect world, they will still be able to get their guns and rule in their Utopian (socialist) state.

We need more media coverage and we need to stop them from portraying us as ignorant hicks. We need to find better ways of getting our message out. More media coverage like the 20/20 gun myth would be great. Unfortunately, things like that just don't happen around here.

Good videos but I doubt they would change a antis mind. They night spark a flame in a fence sitter, to do more research on the subject but a die hard anti will not change. John Stossel's report cherry picked too many report which would raise anyones suspicions. There are just as many offical reports that prove gun laws work, and guns in the home lead to more accidental shootings. It just depends on the motives of the researcher. Being a reformed mild anti I can attest that only open minded people, who wish to do their own research will ever change their opinions. Too many people today just takes some "officals" word as proof, without taking another infromed look at it. And most of the RKBA material comes across as poorly written propaganda which actually turns off more people than it helps. On top of that, Gun owners are their own worst enemy especially with the foaming at the mouth tirates aganist liberals, antis, and people who do not suscribe to their beliefs. I had many run ins with those types of gunowners who came off as jerks, and worst a bit unstable. The best pro RKBA can do is spark a small flame in a person by taking them shooting, being understanding, and giving out factual data that shows most gun laws don't work. And Don't quote data from the NRA since it can easily be discounted as propganada.

I grew up in a rural area and hunted in my youth. I was, however, mildly anti-gun until a few years ago. I disagreed with the liberals on all points of their policies on principle except that I was lukewarm on the gun issue. The mainstream media had seeped into my thinking. I tended toward the Fuddish. It wasn't an issue that affected me as I didn't own a gun. I thought that we didn't need to ban guns outright, just control them. I thought this way even though I was aware of the conflict I had with this violating the Second Amendment. I actually voted Libertarian in the 2000 election before I had children or my personal epiphany about arms. I just didn't care enough about the issue of guns to speak out. If you had asked my opinion I wouldn't have been able to formulate a clear argument against them.

A few years ago I started a family. As I read in the paper about violent crimes, I became conscious of a threat to my family's safety. One case in particular is imprinted in my mind. A young man was found dead at a remote intersection. His infant child was found, still strapped in the carseat, a couple of miles away. Dead. Although the killers were caught, what good did it do that family? I bought a pistol. Then I started reading. Then I bought a year of range time at a range. I've since renewed that membership and joined another range. I have a concealed handgun license and carry daily. I just bought an evil black rifle.

I guess you could say that my interest and conversion is a result of awareness and taking responsibility for my family's safety. I know that the police, much as they care, will not protect me.

"Resistance to sudden violence, for the preservation not only of my person, my limbs, and life, but of my property, is an indisputable right of nature which I have never surrendered to the public by the compact of society, and which perhaps, I could not surrender if I would."
--- John Adams, Boston Gazette, Sept. 5, 1763

"The defence of one's self, justly called the primary law of nature, is not, nor can it be abrogated by any regulation of municipal law."
--- James Wilson, Wilson, Of the Natural Rights of Individuals

"The laws that forbid the carrying of arms are laws of such nature. They disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes... such laws serve rather to encourage than to prevent homocides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man." - Thomas Jefferson
