Has anyone else had to do a little work to fit a Wolff hammer spring to a K frame? I just got the reduced power kit from Wolff this weekend and put it in my 17-5. I had to file down the bottom tang to get it in the slot. I was not really impressed with the quality or design of the spring either. I was able to file the spring almost as easily as mild steel, also noticed that the end of the coil springs were not finished (ground) which I can certainly take care of my self on a grinder. Does anyone have suggestions for other brands?

Thanks

Jeez I've never had to fit any of the six or so kits I've installed.
The Jerry M kits from brownells work well to but you need to stick with federal primers only.

I think someone sold you some counterfeit Wolff springs. I have used and sold their springs for many years and have never seen anything like what you described. Especially the open ends on the coil springs. Where did you buy them?

I bought these directly from Wolff, so definitely not counterfeit. I wasn't accurate in my description about the coil springs in my first post, the coils did have a finishing closed last turn at each end, it just wasn't ground to a flat surface as were the factory springs. As for the hammer spring they call it their power rib spring. The only real problem was that the bottom end was only bent at about a 45* angle and would not fit into the dogleg at the bottom of the grip frame. I filed about .030 off the bottom of the spring then took a flat needle file and took the edge off of the dogleg in the frame and manged to get it in. In hind sight as easily as it filed I probably could have clamped the bottom edge of the spring in a smooth jaw vise and put a little more bend in the tang, but at first not knowing how hard the tempering I discarded that idea not wanting to snap it.

P.S. Yay, Model 17-5 fits on a flatbed scanner!

This will clarify the design of the spring. Basically before I shortened the spring I could not even get it inside the frame much less engage the hooks. Not really obvious however with the tension screw seated but it was far from clearing the opposite side of the spring notch.
