Woman accidentally shoots self in handgun class
FORT SPRING -- A woman taking an advanced handgun class accidentally shot herself during a training session.

Michelle S. Cox, 50, of Alexandria, Va., shot herself in her upper left thigh with a 9mm semiautomatic handgun. Cox was taken to a local hospital after last week's accident at a gun range in Fort Spring. Her condition was not immediately available but Greenbrier County sheriff's Deputy Lt. B. E. Hosey said the injury was not life-threatening.

Hosey said Cox had pointed the gun at her body and had her finger on the trigger, a violation of several safety rules. But he said the shooting was accidental and no charges will be filed.

Good that she'll be OK. Hopefully that really bad mistake was enough punishment and a reminder to follow the safety rules. I wonder what kind of class it was.

Painful way to drive home the importance of following the four rules at all times.

Sorry to hear about this, and I hope she's ok. But this story begs a couple of questions.
*Advanced class? Did she take a basic class first?
*Where was her instructor while she was busy breaking the safety rules?
*How familiar was she with this particular FA?

She's lucky, this could have been a different story.

You can lead your students to knowledge.....

.....but you cannot make them think!

Glad it wasn't serious. Just the kind of incident that feeds the "citizens can't be trusted with guns" mentality, though. :banghead::banghead::banghead:

I think there is a rule some where about not shooting yourself in a gunfight, might want to apply it to training classes as well

"Hosey said Cox had pointed the gun at her body and had her finger on the trigger, a violation of several safety rules"

Great quote included in the article. It would have been too easy for some idiot media to use this example of how unsafe guns are.

I know Michelle. She has taken several classes by Louis Awerbuck and demonstrated herself to be a safe gun handler. She obviously had a dumb attack...thankfully not fatal.

It can happen to anyone. Remember that the next time you're doing one handed manipulation drills, etc.

No charges will be filed????

I think being shot in the leg and totally embarrassed forever is punishment enough.

Sounds like an embarssment to shooters everywhere. I always keep the gun pointed down range and if i am doing any fancy crap its unloaded.

You mean the gun just didn't"go off"..if she was a cop it would've been the gun's fault.(not meant to be anti-cop,just anti-middle management "brass" types who cover stuff up)....also what charges would they have come up with if they were going to charge her?Self-assault?
