I went to the range today to shoot my new shotgun. Started at the practice traps. On the station next to us, about 20 scouts. Learning shotgun safety, and proper technique for bustin' clays. My kudos to their leaders. A little later we went to the skeet range, and across from us was the scouts again with an air rifle range set up. All in all there must have been about 50 - 75 scouts on the property.

Then when we began to shoot skeet there was a group of young men and women on the next field that were with the FFA.

Man, it just doesn't get any better than that. Lots of folks teaching young people the grand sport of shooting.

That and a great day shooting with friends just made my day. My friend's 8 year old son shot his first round of skeet. He smashed 6. Pretty darned good for an 8 year old on his first run.

Each on teach one. That's all it takes.

I've helped teach that class.
Gave a one day (couple hours) beforehand. Brought in a bunch of different shotguns, some torn apart ammo (no real ammo, obviously) to show how it all works. explained chokes, etc and worked on their stance.
The next week, the local american legion range volunteered their time and trap range (it was free for the scouts to shoot, thought that was very cool) and well I pretty much supplied the guns.
20, 21, 22, 20, 13 (nice to have good eyesight)
The one with the 13 I couldn't figure out for a long time. He keep saying he was right handed, but he wasn't, he was left. So he was literally crawling over the gun to get his left eye over the bead. After I told him to close his one eye, his scores went right up into the 20's.
One other kid couldn't hit boo. The shotgun worked, just wasn't working for him. So, I went and pulled out my Beretta 471 SxS and said "don't drop it, it costs a LOT of money and have a good time"
boom boom boom, he started breaking them all and now he wants a SxS. I keep bringing him Shooting Sportsman magazine (real high end stuff) for him to bug his dad about.

it was a lot of fun, ask around for your scout troops, I'm sure they woudl be happy to have someone come in and show them around shotguns. My troop learned way more than normal, probably too much info, but they might remember some of it.

Thanks, you made my morning better.

If each of us did something like this just once a year....

Yep. I keep hoping a chance like this will fall into my lap. My kids aren't old enough to get my "foot in the door" at any kind of their sporting groups. Plus little soccer playing girls and their parents aren't too friendly towards guns around here. :(

I've always thought a Soccer net would be a neat deal to hang a pattern board and steel plates off of...

Maybe a swinging steel target in the shape of goalie with the face of the current ...I better not mention gun grabber face, that might not go over well...

"Okay kiddies, we are going to practice our goal shots today..."

*yep*
