Hello Forum,

Have just bought a shiny new shotgun....and I would like to keep it looking that way for as long as possible.

I am fully aware of how to clean the mechanics, barrels, etc.

However, having only had old guns in the past I have never paid much attention to the wooden stock and just rubbed in a bit of linseed oil to give it a clean from time to time.

Now I have a new gun I would like to take a bit more care and not risk doing anything that will damage it.

So, to keep my wooded stock looking nice and new (it does not have a shiny varnish finish by the way), what sort of maintenance schedule should I do?

Thanks :)

Welcome to THR, Midlander.

It kind of depends upon how the stock is finished. You should treat a new stock as if it were a piece of furniture in your living room. If oil finished then any quality furniture cleaner/conditioner should do. If urethane, you may need nothing more complex than a damp cloth.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply and the kind welcome.

The stock is oil finished.

I did sort of think that any decent wood care product that you use at home would do perfectly well for preserving and cleaning the wood.

Thanks again.
