I finally picked up a 30-40 Krag. U.S. Springfield Model 1898 to be exact. Supposedly a carbine. In a rather ugly and clunky stock, no rear sight. FOUR holes drilled in the left side of the receiver and a non-original front sight. But it's mine. :)

I am looking for a lot of pieces for this one, so let me know if you have a stock, sights, hardware or any other applicable parts you are not using for sale.

What the heck are all those holes for? And how do you get the bolt out of these?

Four holes in side probably means somebody had a Weaver side mount installed.
They are kind of a cheaper rip-off of the Griffen and Howe side mount, still available too so you shouldn't have too much trouble locating one if you want to scope the rifle.

Sight unseen, a clunky looking stock and non original front sight tells me the rifle was probably cut down, hundreds, if not thousands, suffered this fate.

No matter, these rifles still make great shooters, just be sure to have a gunsmith take a look at the front of the bolt head and make sure there are no cracks or weak spots on the bolt face and on or around the bolt lug.

I used to know of a guy who had quite a bit of Krag stuff available.
I will try to find the info and repost if I do.
