Except 0F is not deep cold. :p

You're cold shaming me? I've gone on a beer run at -45F with the snowmobile because the truck didn't start. I've forgotten more words to describe cold in English, German and Finnish than most will ever know. I've even gone winter camping...for fun!:neener:

Seriously though, I thought "deep cold" was a good description for the point where the temperature can rapidly become hazardous to your health if not prepared. I've found around zero to be "black toes" territory when someone on a snowmobile or hunting trip or out on the pipeline wears their 400gram steel toes and cotton socks, then tries to tough it out with the locals who know to dress properly instead of thinking they are exempt from the laws of thermodynamics and physiology.

:) No, that wasn't my intent. I know you've endured real cold. It was more a pointed comment to the people who think such temps are not possible, and if they were, why would anyone go out in it?
A beer run on the sled is a valid reason.

I've known a few of those guys.

I learned a hard lesson in cold shoveling snow for the first time in PA (dumb ol Texas boy here). I had my uninsulated rubber boots and wool socks on while shoveling (for me) an impressive 20 inches of snow. Got done, finally into the shower, and noticed a DISTINCT line across the toes…wrong color, sensitivity, all sort of bad stuff…all my fault. I took a Texas mindset into something I was not prepared for. Better socks, better boots, more awareness….nothing of the temperatures you are describing here…buy the best, an be prepared….

I love my smartwool socks. I heard that they are pricey- I got a good supply issued to me in the army. I wore smartwool in afg every day.

Smartwool. I usually wear the Ultra light hiking socks to work every day but lately no socks due to foot problems. The medium crew work well for most of the hunting situations down here but I have a couple of pair of the heavy hunting crews for when it gets really cold.

My thoughts on good socks....As things are circling the drain these days, one of the important items to have stashed are good merino wool socks, thin and thick. I buy them when they are on sale and somehow feel assured when I open my sock draw. It doesn't matter which of the good American made brands you choose, its time to get them before you look at the label one day and like every once great product we used to make it will say "Made in China".
