Barr Blasts Senate for Firearms Vote
Labels Action Irresponsible

"Former Congressman Bob Barr (R-GA) issued the following statement today,
after the vote in the United States Senate defeating legislation already passed by the House of Representatives, that would have prevented the continuation of anti-firearms lawsuits against firearms manufacturers and retailers. The Many Republicans voted against the legislation, even though it was supported by the Republican leadership, because a number of so-called 'poison pill' amendments were added, making it unacceptable to pro-Second Amendment Senators. Barr's statement follows:

"The United States Senate today showed yet again why it is often referred to
as a 'Club,' rather than a truly deliberative body that considers, understands, and passes significant legislation. The legislation in question today was a bill that would have simply stopped further anti-firearms lawsuits against lawful firearms manufacturers and retailers for subsequent criminal misuse of their products. No other manufacturer or retailer is liable for a criminal taking their product and misusing it. Yet, in recent years liberal, anti-gun cities and other entities have taken to suing firearms retailers for just such actions. This legislation would have re-leveled the playing field so that lawful and law-abiding firearms retailers and manufacturers would no longer be liable for criminals misusing their products.

"Because additional anti-gun amendments were added to the bill, many Republicans who otherwise supported the legislation were forced to vote against it. One amendment would have re-authorized the cosmetic, anti-'assault weapon' ban. Another would have made private citizens who choose to sell an occasional gun at a gun show in a purely private transaction, subject to the full range of federal regulations applicable to firearms dealers.

"Even though the White House said it favored the underlying legislation, the
Administration reportedly did little to ensure the poison pill amendments, which clearly were designed to kill the bill, were kept out of the debate. The ultimate losers in this vote are law-abiding firearms retailers and consumers."

Barr, who served in the House from 1995 to 2003, is a former United States
Attorney and currently serves on the board of the National Rifle Association of America.
