After watching the film Runaway Jury I began to ponder a bit. One of the jury counselors or whatever made the statement that he "believed in a world without guns". How exactly would a "world without guns" be any better than one with them. After all its not like all the crimes that exist today didn't exist before the invention of the gun. Murder, rape, and robbery have coexisted with man since the begining. If anything it guns allow for the weak to defend themselves better than with melee weapons. Obviously, all of you here will agree with my logic but what is the premise of this statement.

I guess they believe in a world without poverty, crime, and freedom as well.

Things would be much worse. Guns are equalizers. That's exactly what's so great about them. It can give an old woman a fighting chance against a rapist. I've heard that Americans use guns to defend themselves over 2 million times a year. Anyone know how valid that number is?

On a slight tangent, I was disappointed with that movie. It's a great story (originally about suing the tobacco companies), but Hollywood had to kowtow to liberals and make it about those eeeevil gun companies. I spent a lot of court scenes flippin of the TV. Despite that, it was a good movie. Great acting by John Cusack, Gene Hackman, and even Dustin Hoffman (even though he's the ??????? lawyer suing the companies). And Rachael Weisz is SO HOT!

Guns are a symbol of self reliance and independence. This offends people who believe in communal dependency.

Excellent point and observation, Johnster.

Many of the intellectual elite claim that it is only "civilized" to need the government to support and protect you, and also to need society as opposed to being self-sufficient. Independence is equated to barbarism. It's like the reaction I get about carrying a Spyderco Military, from the very people who come to me needing me to cut something for them because they failed to equip themselves with a knife! :banghead: I mean, what the hell is your problem?! You don't have what you need, but you think ill of me when I DO? Just because it's a KNIFE and you imagine people running through the street slashing others with it while I imagine opening mail and cutting paracord?! :cuss:

A "Better world without guns" brings to mind (in my at least) a world of gangrene on the limbs, necrotic gut wounds and the like.

Not much of an improvement over our current state of affairs if ya ask me. Of course, there is the Equalizer factor with firearms. Can't have the cute little thing in the next farmstead thinking she can repel invaders with just a chunck of Iron, Lead and Powder now, can we? :scrutiny:

It's just jibberish. "I believe in world peace..." I could say, doesn't mean banning war is going to make a damn bit of difference. Human nature is a beast that no law can reckon with.

A world without guns. Yeah.

If you studied history or read the bible, even just a little bit, you have to know that for thousands, or for evolutionist, millions of years, there were no guns. :what:

The first murder, reportedly, was by the use of a rock. No gun needed.

Where there are no guns, there is still murders, robberies (remember Robinhood), rapes and all other manners of crime.

No guns did not stop any wars nor save any lives. In fact it made combat hand to hand. More people were killed in hand to hand sword, and bow and arrow combat than there are killed today in combat.

If you were not big and strong, you were the oppressed, just as now, except with a gun you can overcome the oppression.

A world without guns is like one without handheld molecular atomicizers*, which destroy everything they are pointed at...

Wait, what, we dont have those? Crazy isnt it? Us foolish americans are living without them and substitute these crazy gunpowder devices instead... Now without those, what would we have? Oh yeah, a bunch of raving lunatics with bats.

*device invented to make a point, AND sound cool :neener:

Pick a time and place prior to the 15th century. Say, Anno Domini 70, Judea. Things were just so loving, supportive and all out wonderful in that gun-free time.

Imagine a world without weapons period. If we weren't intelligent enough to make and use tools, there would rarely be any killing. But since that can never happen, everyone should be armed.

World without guns???

Where the infirm and physically weak are at the absolute mercy of the strong? Yeah. That will work.

Guns are a symbol of self reliance and independence. This offends people who believe in communal dependency.

Actually, I'd say guns are a uncommonly effective means of self-reliance and independence rather than mere symbols.

We used to have a world without guns. We used knives, swords, maces, long bows, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.

I wonder if these people realize that guns are probably one of the most responsible item for today's world being the way it is. The world remained pretty much the same up till the point where guns became common. Guess what? These people don't like living in a world with religion? They would have hated the time where guns didn't exist. They like writing stories? THey would have hated that time. They hate working land for a living (unless you were one of those upper class they continually whine about), too bad for them.

In short, look at the world before 1600 or so. Very few civilizations I would have wanted to live in back then. In fact, only two, Athens and pre-AD Rome.

A world without cars

Yea, I mean, after all, motor vehicles kill more people every year in the US than deaths due to guns. And technically, unless you are severly pistol whipped, a gun doesn't kill you, the bullet does ;) Maybe next we could outlaw spray paint since it is destroying the young minds of today. Ooh, ooh, then we could outlaw plastic bags :scrutiny:
