EDIT: Ah, I read it as "why would anyone suggest" not "would anyone suggest".

XD and M&P are fairly similar; so much so that I'm trying to decide myself right now between the two. If you want the M&P over the XD, then I'd go for it.

If you've invested in a platform already there's no real gain in switching to another that is far more similar than different. It will cost you money and gain you nothing.

Rc's exception to that general statement may be a smart trade though I haven't compared the two. I can conceal an M&P 9c (and larger) without issue but there is certainly merit in a Shield size pistol for that purpose. Not every person's concealment method or body size will allow them to comfortably or discreetly carry large frames.
 
A little more info; I have already an XD9sc, XD40sc, XD45c, and XDM40c.

I handled a buddy's M&P40c and it feels pretty nice. The bore axis is noticeably lower. AND it is more ambidextrous friendly(my son is a lefty).

I could part with my 40 subcompact or possibly even the 45 compact to fund the M&P.

It has to be a 40 to carry for my employer. How's the M&P40c stack up against the XDM40c?

I'm not interested in the Shield at all.
 
The little pinky extension on the M&P_c pistols allows me to get a full grip, with no room to spare. I have large palms, so that is a big difference. You'll probably like the XD trigger better.
 
I've owned both. I own neither now and don't plan on going back down either road, but I'd much rather have the M&P.
 
Have you considered selling one of the XD .40s and picking a nice Glock 22? Does it have to be polymer? CZ makes some really nice .40s in all steel (they make reportedly fine polys as well, but I have never shot them).
 
Alright. Why would you chose one over the other? Some here have preference, but do not expound.

The question was about the M&P; not Glock or CZ. Neither of which I am interested in.

Yes, I would. I like the ergos and the lower bore axis of the M&P more than the XD series, and I don't care for the aggressive grip texture of the XDm series.
 
I am not considering a "Shield". I'm interested in the M&P 40 compact. Whichever gun I wind up with will need to meet my LE Agency's requirements as an alternate duty weapon. As a detective I prefer the compacts and sub compacts, but not pocket pistols.

If I liked Glock I'd have them issue me one. I'm thinking toward the future and want one my son would like. And he's a lefty. All my other guns will be willed to him, and they're all for righties. Hence the M&P possibility.

Your post is not as clear as it needs to be on your reason for the change. So I will assume that 1) your son is not old enough to own a pistol and 2) that funds are tight and the sale is needed for the new purchase.

The only suggestion I could give is that you should sell the one that is least used and sits in the safe the most. In my opinion that would be the XD45 or one that you have not mentioned as yet such as an old revolver that you are holding onto for old times sake.

Or you could just gift him the XD9 and avoid the hassle of selling anything.

If the purchase is for yourself then you are correct in selling one of the 40's for a replacement. But let us get this clear as to your reasons for the sale.

To make more clear. My son is old enough to possess a handgun (by State law) but not old enough to purchase one (by federal law). I want a lefty-friendly gun becuase when I'm no longer able to safely operate a gun, they'll be his. He's a fine shot.

I'm not poor, just willing to part with a gun I don't use anymore. Most likely the XD40sc since I have the XDm 40c now. As long as I am employed I'd want to be able to carry it on my LEO creds.

I doubt my old revolver would get me a new M&P. Hmmm. Maybe my Wife's would...
Anyone have FHS experience?I see they are ambi friendly.

Those 2 would not be my personal top 2 choices, however out of those 2 I would pick the M&P without a doubt. Personal preference / bias goes to the M&P. I prefer the ergo's of the S&W but the trigger needs work. A nice trigger fix and the M&P is a much nicer feeling weapon for myself than the XD's.

Also as you mention the newer FNH FNS series is full ambi.
 
The bigest danger in selling a XD to get a M&P is that you may find yourself selling all your XD's..lol I love my M&P's I have 2 a 9mm fulsize and a midsize .45 (full grip compact bbl). If I can ever find a steal for a fullsize .40 I will grab it and I dont even love the .40
 
I'd suggest buying a full size M&P. Have your son shoot that and see what he thinks. If he likes it you could consider trading your compact for a 40c to use and eventually will to him. He'll have an ambi-friendly pistol for now and a match set later.

I own 3 M&Ps, one L, one FS and one c. They work. Had I purchased a set of XDs or FNs I'm sure they would work just as well. If the question is which fits your son bring him along and let him sort them out. I feel for you, my father keeps buying right-hand bolt actions under the same premise that they'll all be mine someday.
