I have a few XDs and M&Ps - makes no real difference to me - I usually tell folks the biggest difference I see is if you want a grip safety or not?
Since your son is a lefty, sounds like maybe an M&P? I don't have a compact, but I know some of the M&Ps have ambidextrious controls?
As an old DA revolver guy, I tend not to navel gaze over triggers - I have yet to modify any of my triggers (they're all SD guns), and I practice using the controlled slap method - when the time comes and the adrenaline's pumping, I doubt seriously I'm going to be worried 'bout riding the sear, shooting to reset, etc!
