I'm thinking about finally adding a shotgun again. I let one go some time ago when I needed the money and I have simply waited too long to replace it.

Some of you may know from other parts of the board that I'd prefer a carbine for defense for several reasons, however for now I'll probably go shotgun. One, they are untold fun to shoot. Two, they are probably the most cost effective HD gun out there.

Anyway, I am primarily looking for something with a shorter barrel for HD purposes, but I'll probably eventually buy a longer barrel to get into skeet/trap. I am not a hunter and I will not be hunting with it.

In the past I saw several Remington 870s w/ 18.5" or 20" barrels, a smooth bore and rifle sights. Well, I'm not seeing those anymore, but that is what I want.

The only short barreled shotguns I'm seeing right now, and the only shotguns I'm seeing right now with rifle sights are rifled shotguns. I've also seen some pretty decent prices on some of these. Well, would there be anything wrong with buying a rifled shotgun but using buckshot in it? I know it will mess up the rifling, but I don't hunt. What I'm worried about is, will the rifling mess with the pattern too much or even would this be dangerous? Also, if I messed up the rifling this way would I still be able to use the rifled slugs meant for a smooth bore if I wanted to shoot it at a rifle range that requires slugs? Of course, I know I wouldn't be able to use the non-rifled slugs meant for a rifled barrel.

If I would really be better off ordering what I really want, a standard smooth bored barrel, with a short barrel and rifle sights, then I will. However, these (the rifled short barrel with good sights) are around (no wait) and there have been some nice sales lately (I guess with hunting season coming on). If I had to order it I doubt I'd get a sale price.

DIDO ! Wait for a smooth bore to show up or order one - rifling and buck shot don't play well together. :D

The Benelli M1 Tactical is an eighteen inch smoothbore auto and the Benelli Nova pump is also available in a short barrel smoothbore configuration.
