I am looking for a Remington 700 in 308 and found one in a local pawn shop, BUT...

The barrel isn't original and is just stamped 308. It has a target crown and a flat black finish. The bolt doesn't look original either. The bolt knob isn't checkered like most 700s nor is it jeweled. The price isn't bad assuming I can dicker which will be easy because I don't "have to have it."

Shopkeeper doesn't know anything or claims to not know anything about the mods.

He probably got it way cheap because it isn't original. If you are lucky, somebody has paid to put on an aftermarket barrel, which might shoot really well. Then again, they may have dumped it because it won't shoot.

Mebbe you can get it for cheap. If it's less than $350, the action (assuming it's a 700) is worth that. I'd try to check to see if it's a Remington trigger. Somebody may have made a tactical rifle.

Take cash and lay it on the counter.

It's an ADL and in good shape with a few minor scuffs on the stock. The bluing on the action is deep with no noticeable wear while the barrel's matte finish is noticeably different than the receiver but with no wear. Without a bore scope the barrel appears shiny. They're asking $550, but there is probably a lot of room there for a final price.

Remington has offered some budget versons of the 700 with bolts and bolt handles left plain. The stock is likely not walnut if it is the version I'm thinking of.

I might take a chance if the price were $200-$250. For $550 you can get a brand new rifle and new scope with a guarantee from the factory.

jmr, those models were the 788 and 78. This one is definitely a 700 since it is roll marked as one. What really threw me was that the bolt knob isn't checkered nor the body jeweled.

No, I wouldn't. You can order a brand new one, set up like you want for a reasonable price. Bargain guns are like bargain parachutes. The price may be right but when you need it to work......

$ 550.00 doesn't encourage me to even dicker with them, not with the number of fine used rifles out there and the unanswered questions. YMMV

I have to say pass. I can go down to the Local BiMart and pickup either a Remington or Savage with a scope for a better price.
