im considering putting up the cash to buy a new rifle...im looking for a pretty accurate 308. im torn between moving away from a bolt platform, remington 700 in particular, to the possibility of an ar-10 platform. this will mainly be a range/target gun, but might make its way to the woods on a rare occasion, so im a bit worried about carrying my "black rifle" on a potential hunting trip, even though i probably shouldnt be as much as i am. i have looked at panther (dpms) and some armalites, and im doing my best to spend under 1200 on the rifle itself. the bolt gun competition comes from the remington 700 ltr (light tactical rifle) and 700 police series rifles, also in 308. these run in the 750-1000 range usually. as far as rifle weight goes, anything under 10lbs will be more or less fine. im not looking for a mountain rifle or carbine type deal, so weight isnt a huge concern, but anything thats not light to the point of bouncing the gun off its bipod or making it a pain to regain proper sight picture is definitely a plus. anybody have any input? i like the modularity of the ar platform a little bit more, as well as the pistol grip and the seemingly endless modifications i can do to it. i know the 700s are readily modified as well, but i think the ar mods top those of the 700, and its handling characteristics would likely allow me to use it for more applications. this would be my first trip into "ar" territory, so any help regarding which is a better pick, and any help regarding other ar type rifles i should look at would be extremely helpful. thanks in advance guys!
