Would you take a shot at dusk?

As long as it is legal shooting hours, and I can see what I am shooting, well enough to place the shot where I want it, I will take the shot. I have rarely had to track my own deer in the dark, but have helped plenty of friends track in the dark, and I am by now pretty good at it. So I like to take those evening shots, as that is when activity really peaks in my neck of the woods.

Without a doubt if I'm prepared with a good flash light, and I'm shooting in legal light. I don't know how bad coyotes are where your hunting, but if they are at all a problem, make sure you hang your remaining quarters in a tree while packing out what you can carry. I've had an experience in which coyotes devoured most of a deer before I got back to it.

And I think it was last year that my son lost almost an entire mule deer to them critters. He stuck it real good with his bow just before sun set, and then waited about 30 minutes before starting to track it. We had good lights to see with, but in the hour or so it took to walk him out, the coyotes ate about 80% of him. We found him right at dark, so they had to have found him within just a few minutes of being stuck. I hate coyotes, which is why I kill them every chance I get! And if bears are around, they will take the whole deer home with them.
