I am at a Electro Optics trade show in San Jose this week, Photonics West. I noticed that Elcan optical was displaying. I walked over there to possibly see their red dot sight. We sold them some laser alignment get for this project.

This application engineer shows me their thermal sight for use with the M4 carbine. I have Gen III 7B nightvision and am pretty impressed with it. However, I have never seen a thermal scope. It was a hoot looking at all the people with it. Seems like a pretty neat device. It was huge though. Maybe 14" long and heavy. About $10,000.

I still like the Gen III stuff better for SHTF. It would seem to be impossible to identify your target for an urban situation. You can tell it is a person. But, you can't tell if it is Fred your neighbor.

>>>>$10,000!?! But I guess if you're the .gov you buy in bulk for a better price... maybe only $2000 or $3000....

Depends, sometimes the gov. seems to buy in bulk for a worse price, e.g., 20K.

Or are those days gone?

When .gov buys stuff it's usually more like $5000 scope, $2500 in procurment bid documentation, $2500 in maintenence documentation...

10 years ago I did a project involving a Mitsubishi Thermal Imaging camera.

The camera cost over $100K and weighed about 40lbs.

$10K and something you can stick on a rifle is pretty impressive in my book.
