Went to a local gun show today to look around. I was surprised to find that all the rumors were true. They had plenty of all types of ammo but it was because the prices were asinine. Several vendors had 9mm for a measly 37.99 a box of 50. Most handguns were 20-100 percent above local retail. I saw a Ruger LCR with laser for only $820.00. What a moron. They had the same on across the way for only 699.00. Still ridiculous. I did not notice a lot of people leaving with guns or ammo. What is really bad for the vendors is they apparently didn't do their homework because around here guns are still available in the stores and ammo is attainable with a little searching at regular prices. I might not bother going again.

Gun shows will be the last place where prices will head back towards normal. Too many Wal-mart people that don't realize they're buying the same ammo from the guy at the gun show for a ridiculous mark-up that they could have bought at Wal-mart if they showed up at Wal-mart first thing in the morning.

I'm getting 9MM range ammo for $14.45/box delivered. That's not quite the $8.75/box I was paying pre-panic, but it is headed in the right direction.

I'm also seeing all calibers of boutique SD ammo back on the shelves at "normal" (buck-a-round) prices.

You have to shop around to find what you need at reasonable prices but things will get better.

My local gun stores are wiped out of anything popular. I did see a box of CCI 22mag (the cubeish box w the swamp guy on it, 325 rounds? 275?) today at Academy. $40

Local gun shows are flea markets. I no longer waste my time going to them. Quite honestly I do not care if they ban them.

Thanks, y'all ... now I got Mix-a-Lot's "Swap Meet Louie" stuck in my head. They are kinda like flea markets, especially the ones with questionable "deer jerkey" and wonky looking 223 the guy swears is Lake City... I've never actually bought a gun at one, but I do like the carnival atmosphere now and again. :p

Those who sell jewelry, jerky and junk need a place to show their stuff too I guess. I just wish they'd stop calling them gun shows ... few avid shooters and collectors are being fooled.

For the last several years around here, the gun related stuff is nothing but local retailer's stock items. And I can view that stuff in their stores at no charge.

I don't think there's any real push to ban gun shows. What they want is to close a claimed "gun show loophole".
Which actually means to stop all private sales, whether in a packed worn out local fair building, an unused warehouse at the edge of town, or in your own living room.
I've not been to a gun show in years, but I have a huge problem with the idea of "closing that loophole".

A friend of mine went to a local gunshow a couple of weeks ago but didn't go in because the wait in line at the entrance was something like an hour. And this was after the show had already opened.

Regardless of what prices and selection were like inside the show (that is if you could even get that close to a table to see what they had), that to me is just plain ridiculous.

I went to a gun show in Greenville Texas a few weeks ago and also noticed that guns were priced sky high. However, I found powder and primers were very reasonable. Crazy times.

Supply and demand. Prices reflect what the market is willing to pay, and apparently enough people are willing to pay higher prices a the moment.

OTH, you'll always see some prices that push it a bit to far, and the item in question ends up sitting for an eternity. We all know that one gun or pawn shop owner that "loves his guns", you know, the shop who's prices on dust-covered guns are at least 25% higher than others within a 10 minute drive.

I recall during the Great Obama Gun Buying Panic I (late '07 to early '08) seeing a plain-jane Russian SKS at a gun show for $1,000. According to friends who attended late the final day, it was still there. Same for the bubba'd SKS with hideous, spray painted stock (the paint job was so thick and gloopy you could tell of the stock was wood or plastic without holding it) for $799. It didn't sell either.

Same for the ones who were buying 9mm Wallie World White Box for $22/100 and trying to sell them for $80/100. By the end of the day that guy maybe sold 2 boxes.
