wrapped knife handles?

I made a knife yesterday and need something to cover the handle. I like how the rope/twine/cord wrapped knife handles look and feel and was wondering if anyone could tell me or link me to a website that explain how to properly wrap something to form a handle.

This is the sort of thing i'm talking about (neither of these are my knife, just examples)




Any help would be appreciated

I dabble a bit in knife making, and produced 2 hunters with handles wrapped in leather thong. It was simple and reasonably attractive.... I'm sure others have better methods....

This was the first knife I ever made, so it's quite crude. I since re-wrapped the handle without allowing the thong to twist, which worked out rather nicer.



I started with leather thong (duh). I soaked it in warm water to make it stretchy and pliable. I started the wrap at the guard, holding the free end by having it double back under the wrappings for a couple of rounds. Then continue till the handle's done, pulling firmly each wrap for a good even tension. When I reached the butt, I underwrapped it one wrap to hold the free end.

I'm a cheater. I hit both ends of the wrap with a couple drops of thin crazy-glue to ensure it never comes undone. I'd like to know a better way to accomplish this myself....

explain how to properly wrap something to form a handle.

I am not sure if there is a way to properly wrap a handle. It is differant depending on the knife handle( shape,holes, how deep the knife sits in a kydex sheath exc.) and the users hands.

For example my Becker is wrapped to suit me (by trial and error)...many others have wrapped theirs far differantly.



Which knife are you wrapping? Maybe then one of us could show an example.

I typed "how to wrap a knife handle" into Google and got 745,000 hits...

Saw plenty of photo "how-to's" as well as videos online.

I personally don't like wrapped handles as they don't insulate your hand for chopping, nor is it comfortable for lengthy work sessions. Cords also absorb & hold moisture, dirt, grime, bacteria, blood, etc.
