Book claims media showed anti-U.S. bias over Iraq
The Associated Press
Updated: 8:15 a.m. ET Dec. 30, 2003
PARIS, France - Reporter Alain Hertoghe’s book accused the French press of not being objective in its coverage of the U.S.-led war in Iraq. His newspaper fired him.

The book, “La Guerre a Outrances†(The War of Outrages), criticizes the French reporting for continually predicting the war would end badly for the U.S.-led coalition.

“Readers can’t understand why the Americans won the war,†Hertoghe said in a telephone interview. “The French press wasn’t neutral.â€

The book, published Oct. 15, charges French reporters were more patriotic than journalistic and what was written amounted to disinformation.

Book examines five major French papers
It examines daily coverage by five major French dailies, including Hertoghe’s own La Croix, in the three weeks from the first strikes on Baghdad on March 20 to April 9 when Saddam Hussein’s regime fell.

‘As soon as there were a couple of wounded, of dead, they [French newspapers] were talking about Vietnam, Stalingrad.’

In contrast, work by journalists traveling with U.S. troops indicated that “the war was advancing well,†he said.

Hertoghe, a 44-year-old Belgian, said reporters reflected the emotional high in France more than realities on the battlefield, becoming caught up in France’s central role in leading the opposition to the war at the United Nations.

“The French public was so carried away,†he said. The journalists, he wrote in the book, “dreamed of an American defeat.â€

Hertoghe, who covered the 1991 Gulf War and the presidential campaign that put President Bush in the White House, was assistant editor-in-chief of La Croix’s online version during the Iraq war.

Besides war coverage in La Croix, the book examines that of the independent Le Monde, the conservative Le Figaro, the leftist Liberation and the regional daily Ouest-France, which has the largest circulation in France.

Over three weeks, the five papers carried 29 headlines condemning Saddam’s dictatorship and 135 blaming Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

Hertoghe was fired on Dec.15 for a “loss of confidence†following publication of the book. La Croix, in a letter, cited four points, including damaging the newspaper’s reputation, Hertoghe said.

Silence from French papers

La Croix refused to comment.

Efforts for comment from Le Monde — the paper Hertoghe targeted most severely — also were unsuccessful, with the international editor away on vacation. A Paris-based reporter cited in the book did not answer his phone.

Only a free newspaper handed out in the Metro, “20 Minutes,†has so far reviewed Hertoghe’s book.

“The silence is deafening†in France, although there have been rave reviews in Belgium, said Ronald Blunden, editorial director at Hertoghe’s publishing house, Calmann-Levy.

“dreamed of an American defeat.â€

One of my former co-workers would argue with me on the politics of this war. For the most part it was a polite debate and we either would come to an agreement or we would agree to disagree. I always spoke my mind and let her know what I felt and I thought she did the same until I overheard her on the phone with one of her friends. Apparently her hatred of Bush was so great that she really wanted us to lose the war and suffer great casualties. I wouldn't doubt this is how a lot of people really feel. She being an immigrant did not make me feel any better.

Well, so much for supporting the troops but opposing the war. Anybody who doesn't believe that most of the left did not pray to their respective gods for a massive US defeat are living in la-la land.

Well...the French are aknowledged experts on losing battles/wars!

What I have to laugh at are those celebrities that argued against war because the Iraquis were "sure to use their WMD" and destroy us

Same people are now claiming they never believed there were WMD

I only thought FOX was in favor of the war; the others were slightly better than the French. Left-wing media is an oxymoron.

IIRC, 81-89% of the American news reporters are left of center (being kind here and avoiding the "L" word)). Are you shocked that the cheese eating surrender monkeys are any different? :D

“The French public was so carried away,†he said. The journalists, he wrote in the book, “dreamed of an American defeat.â€

Eh. It's just their way of hoping America will turn into the United States of france. You can't be french if you're winning wars.

gee, Malone.....

"So the French media was biased against the war? About as much, I'll bet, as the US media was in favor of the war."
************************************************************

The U.S. media was in favor of the war?

On which day?

:D

Reality trumps imagination -

If they can dream it, it must be true!

I'm amazed they don't suffocate from the weight of sand they continue to bury their heads in. They missed the boat and apparently don't even realize it. Still standing at the dock.

"Political correctness" (PC) has evolved into "perceptually challenged" (PC).

"So the French media was biased against the war? About as much, I'll bet, as the US media was in favor of the war."

Let us compare the accuracy of reporting (not tthat the reporters are ever really all that accurate!).

French "The Americans are losing" and we won.

American "We are winning" and we won.

I wonder which is more objective here?

Malone, just what was the gas that killed all the kurds back in '91...??? What happened to all the missiles recently revealed to be in violation of range limitations...?? What about the prior administration and all the lib senators screaming about the WMD in Iraq...???

Not JUST this administration guys - so soon you forget. :barf:

I can't figure how you people manage to live in the same country as I and keep the blinders so firmly in place. The New York Times led the propaganda war against Saddam's "Weapons of Mass Destruction." Show me the national media source that questioned the administrations claims of Nigerian uranium purchases, or missile parts, etc. BEFORE THR WAR. I challenge anyone to show me an example of a major network in this country that wasn't blindly accepting the "war against terror" in every news broadcast. Several networks had "America's New War" or some such emblazoned on their screens for the duration.

People like you make good body servants.

I thought it was a tautology.

You're right, I mistyped.

I can't figure how you people manage to live in the same country as I and keep the blinders so firmly in place.

Translation: Those of us on the left are superior to those of you on the right and the half-truths we read in the far-left press are superior to the half-truths you read in the mainstream left-wing press and, God forbid, that evil lying conservative bastion, FOX.

People like you make good body servants.

Translation: We superior leftists have our eyes open, because we know how to "think critically," and know the real "truth" while the rest of you are deluded by the Right-Wingers and the mainstream press that is the lapdog of Big Business. I know because I read it in some left-wing socialist newspaper printed in England or at a progressive news site like commondelusions.org.
