Hello,

Trying to find the best hard sided gun cases, have looked at Pelican, they seem pretty solid, but are there other options? Looking for the best combo of price, protection, and quality. Thanks.

Personally, I really like the Pelicans and Starlights, but they are a bit pricey.

A good alternative I've found has been the Gunguard All Weather series from Doskocil. Gunguard

I don't think they (at least the double rifle) aren't able to withstand the weight of a Hummer (not rigid enough) on them but they will more than hold up to regular use. The foam inside seem to be the same as that found in the more expensive cases with Pick-n-Pluck-type and easy to cut rigid main interior foam. The foam against the shell of the case top and bottom walls are the softer eggcrate type. The cases are usually no more than $90 for the biggest models and the double rifle has wheels as standard. They can also be found at local sporting/outdoor shops like Dick's Sporting, Gander Mountain, MC Sporting, etc. Not sure if Cabela's and Bass Pro carry the line.

I have Doskocil, GunGaurd and Winchester brand hard cases. Any additional cases will likely be Winchester ones also. My pistols stay put in my Winchester case, unlike the Gungaurd one and I like the construction better than that of the Doskocil case. I'm also partial to the aluminum cases for appearance.;)

To clarify, I don't care much for the Gunguard Delux or other less durable and less water resistant grades. The All Weathers are more like the Pelicans and Starlights than the aluminum cases with the small lockable latches.

I have a Pelican double case for two match guns. Guess what I use 99% of the time? Two "tactical" soft cases. Those Pelicans are great for long trips or air travel, but for frequent use they're TOO BIG AND HEAVY. You'll find that a Pelican won't fit where a soft case often will and it becomes a pita.

Too true. The only things I keep and transport in the All Weather are my precision rifles. Everything else is in a blacktac bag. At ~53" in length, I have to fold down the rear seat of my little Honda Civic to get that thing to fit. Blacktac fits sideays no prob. But, if you don't want the gun to get knocked around, the hard cases are the way to go.

Definitely a gut check. My match ARs are certainly "precision" enough to warrante hard cases, but realistically, I can have them in some heavily padded soft cases and put that in my back floorboard. I know they're not getting abused there. For local (less than 100 miles away) matches that's what I'll do. For further matches, I'll use the Pelican.

i have a storm case, see my thread in this forum.
the make another version of storm case, that they claim it will survive plane crash. hard enough? :)
