How many of you use this powder in your AR's ?.I am going to reload 556 for the first time, using Sierra 63/65 grain bullets.Have any pro's and con's on its usage?.

Excellent with the 55 grain and heavier bullets, and flows great through the powder measure.

A good powder that offers a great combination of accuracy and velocity.

Just my .02,
LeonCarr

I have had great results loading the Hornady 55/g SP's.

It flows / meters very consistently in my old RCBS Uniflow.

I tried this powder based on RC's advice.
I sure am glad I did.

I got a 8 lbs jug today after trying it. It worked real good with 55gn bulletts in my ar

works very well for me and my AR as said meters very well and has been easier
for me to find around here

I've been using Winchester 748 for over 35 years, since I bought my first .223 in 1978. It's an excellent powder, but the heaviest bullets I've loaded with it are 55 grains. I have no experience with it for heavier bullets.

Hope this helps.

Fred

I use it regularly for 52gr to 69gr loadings, I'm sure it works for heavier but I have another preference for those. It's easy to load in volume as it flows and measures very consistently. I also like and use Hodgdon BL-C(2) for the same qualities...when I can't find one I will pick up the other.

I have had excellent results with 748. Powder of choice with 50s and 55s (most of my loads).

I have found with those super long (heavy) bullets fight for space in the case and I end up with compressed powder.

Load with care.

Need new dies for 223Rem

OK! Got the cases sized and trimmed to size using the 223 rem dies I had when I had a mini-14.
Won't chamber easily or extract easily in my AR.Who is using small base dies and of what manufacturer?.
Raring to get started reloading,I just may like reloading as much as I love shooting, guess its the order of things.

I use Hornady dies for the 5.56/.223 and have had no trouble at all. Your 5.56 chamber may be a bit tight. RCBS and Hornady make small-base sizing dies. They are available in a kit or as individual dies if you already have a die set.

I have 748 and AR-Comp. I have heard really nice things about CFE223 and have a pound of it as well to try out. Plus the usual H335, 3031 and BL-C2.

Color a sized case with a Magic-Marker and chamber it.

See where the ink rubs off.

The odds are 1,000 to 1 it isn't the base.

The odds are 1,000 to 1 you haven't set the shoulder back enough due to an improperly adjusted sizing die.

I have reloaded .223 for 45 years, for bolt-action and semi-autos with an RCBS standard die set.

Many people simply don't screw the sizing die down far enough to get press cam-over, or all the linkage slack out.

So the case shoulder is not pushed back where it belongs.

What RC said.

I have/use RCBS and Lee, both standards not small base.

Mite add, if you are putting any crimp on when seating the bullet, that too can cause problems buckling out the brass just at and below the shoulder, very hard to see with my eyes. (I don't use any crimp on .223/5.56)

748 is excellent for 223. I have shot numerous 5 shot, 100yd groups that I could cover with a dime.

I have some W748 and you guys are making me want to whack up a few .223 rounds to see for myself

Win 748 was invented during the Vietnam war specifically for government contract M-16 ammo.

It worked good then, it works good now!!

Most of the best powders ever produced where first produced for military ammo production!!

I have found 748 to be sensitive to temperature. I developed a load for an AR that was very accurate and no signs of pressure back in my early days of reloading. Then I shot the same load on a hot summer day and blew some primers. This was before I understood the need to decrease max loads in military brass. One of my .223s is very partial to H335 so that is my go-to .223 powder now.

Ww748

In 1981, I got a pound of WW748 for a song at a gun store that getting out of the reloading business. I loaded 500 rounds of .223 with 60 grain Hornaday soft point bullets on top of 25 grains of powder with CCI primers that I shot through my Mini-14. All of the ones I shot worked flawlessly. This was back in the day when I was too poor to have a chronograph, so I don't know how fast they were, but the place I could shoot at the time was a fixed 200 meters and they would hit anything I shot at. I think I may still have some leftovers from that batch in a closet somewhere.

In the long run (after I got a chronograph), I settled on IMR4198 for .223 going through my Mini-14 since 20 grains of it with those same 60 grain Hornaday bullets would get 2900 feet per second with good accuracy and a pound would load 350 rounds (versus 280 rounds for the WW748).
