PORTVILLE — State Police think an area veteran may be missing a piece of his World War II memorabilia collection.
State Police reported Monday that a World War II-era military rifle and ammunition for the weapon were found in separate yards in the town of Portville. The homeowners had no idea how the items appeared on their property or who left them.
Sgt. Gary M. Segrue said investigators believe the rifle and ammunition were stashed by someone who took them from another home.
“We’re worried that there has been a burglary out there and people might not know that anything is missing,†he said.
Sgt. Segrue asked that people in and around the town of Portville check to see if they are missing any guns or ammunition. If they are, they can call troopers at 373-2550. Troopers are withholding details about the rifle and the ammunition it takes.
“We want whoever calls us to describe it to us so we know it belongs to them,†he said.
Sgt. Segrue said teens may have taken the rifle and ammunition and hid them in neighbors’ yards hoping to pick them up later.
He said the rifle shows some weathering, indicating it may have been stored in a garage or barn. He said that could explain why no one has reported it missing.

 If it was kids that ran off with this, it ticks me off. Some folks have no respect for other people's property. Then again, it might not have been properly secured. Eh.

Sounds to me like someone's M1 and accompanying ammo can or bandoleers went missing.

What State is this?

It's pretty cool that the Police sound like they are intending to give the gun back to the rightful owner.
