X into SP bullets?

Just saw Taxi Driver again, and the part where he cuts an X into the SJSP bullet with his knife. I know this got around that it was "supposed" to cause the lead to fragment, but what I want to know is what was this procedure called?

PS - I've seen it several times not just in the movie...and NO I do not intend to do it, just curious what it's called...

I always called it the "cut nose dum dum." Not exactly what Captain Bertie Clay did at Dum Dum Arsenal, India, but the same idea to try to induce expansion. It didn't work very well for the British and it didn't work very well for the Mob, and it won't work very well for you.

The big mean hunter also does it in that one movie, I think it's called "bear". You know, the one where some hunters go bear hunting. I think one hunter gets hurt by one of the bears and the other hunter wants revenge or something. I was little when I saw it (like maybe 7), that's about the only part I remember. I believe I cut a few X's into some of my lead pellets for my pellet gun, should I ever encounter a bear while I was out quail hunting As far as what it's called...yeah, I'd go with dumb!
